Since  Leprechauns are related to gold, maybe it's some of the metal genre?

* Gilbert looks up metal music from Wikipedia.

Is it:

Er... probably a rubbish guess but...

Spoiler
Greenday? Admittedly all I'm going on is the association with the colour green, I don't have any ideas how the "fake" element could come into it.

Ahhh! That's not it, but you've crossed the ball to me and the goal is open so I'm gonna have to tap it in:

That is the correct answer! The original riddle did not have the word fake in it so I added it as an extra hint, but that may have just made it more confusing.

This reminds me of my young days playing football...I'd mash the ball forwards with all my might, then shout to the player closest to where I'd sent it: "Johnny! RUN!"  (laugh) And that's how to unwittingly become an assist king.

Here's one I came up with a while ago to use in a story, but it never really fit. May as well share it here!

A gift few refuse when first they receive it. Though it's a gift, you may never thieve it. Those few for whom it grows heavy may leave it. Many who bear it don't deeply perceive it.

What is it?
They/them. Here are some of my games:

@heltenjon that's a good guess! It is not the correct answer, however.  :)

Incorrect on both counts, but these are great guesses  (nod)

@Stupot I like that! It's not the answer I have in mind though.

That's the "grows heavy" part that confuse me.  :-\
Is it a common way to say or it means literally?
