First off, this site looks AWESOME! Hats off to the designer (I don't remember who it was, but I remember seeing the sample).
To those who remember me and my ever-starting new projects, hi. I've honestly missed coming by. I recall my (very) cameo at
Mittens 2009 (?), and meeting a few of you, and it may sound ridiculous, but this forum, all the projects I participated in
(that I'll assume never saw the light of day), and the few people that took the tiny bit off time the web required to get to
know me, or at least talk to me a little, meant a lot to me during a very tough time of my life.

I've been doing a lot of blogging, of my own and for others' sites, and I've contributed in some ebooks (almost all of it based
on fitness and/or strength and conditioning stuff). I feel ready to write my own ebook, and I want it to be about AGS...the program,
the games, the history, the community (first and foremost), and the success it seems to have brought some people.

I don't know if you guys all really appreciate it (I'm sure you do, but still), but I pop in every now and then, maybe every 6 to
12 months, and I see this game is on Steam. Another game got mention in PCGamer. Wadjet Eye...just, damn.

And Resonance...what a beast of a project. I read about it in Forbes.

This is running long, but like I said, I missed ya's. Anyway, I want everyone that clicks this to know about my plans. I'm going to
TRY to get interviews with a LOT of folks...not just the Dualnames(es) and the M0Ds(es), but the Cyrus(es) (do you remember that guy? He just messaged me! About something I posted in '10 no less! Refreshing!) and the...ooo, is Icey still about? ;)

Just a heads up. I really think this would be a win.

EDIT
1) Does anyone live in SC? I just moved from FL, and that would just be a cool thing.
2) I just saw that I can share posts on FB. How cool! I don't want to, but I LOVE the face(book)lift!

General Discussion / Oh, neat.

So, wanting to try using a tablet, and being broke, I found one on Craigslist. The price was so right, so when the fellow informed me (at the very moment we were about to trade money for item) that it used a serial connection, I decided to bite the bullet and get a converter, which had worked for him, as he demonstrated. Now I've just spent about 3 hours fighting this beast, and I just can't get the drivers working together. It's a serial Intuos 2, and I have Windows 7 64bit installed...any thoughts?

I feel like there's a possibility the my OS being 64 bit has something to do with it, but my computer savvy has it's limits.

Also, I have a good serial / USB cable. It's got the neat little box on it that the cheapy ones don't.

Thanks in advance. My Win7 is a legit copy, so I'm not too keen on having to switch to something else over this. :(

When animating, does anyone find it easier to animate before shading? I don't go too crazy on the shading, but I usually have 3 shades of each basic color. I've been shading each frame as I go for, literally, years, and now I'm wondering if that's what a) causes me to get burnt out and take months off at a time, and b) makes some of my animations too stiff. I feel like if I weren't so worried about all the little non-moving details it might help me focus of getting from one frame to the next faster, while it's fresh on my mind.

I only ask because I'm so far into the project I'm working on, and I'd hate to stop and try a new way to find out it sucks.

Critics' Lounge / Animating gears
Thu 20/08/2009 05:09:02
Hey, guys. I need to animate these gears, but it's not going well. I'm not sure if there was a better way to have shaped them to facilitate this. This was all I could come up with at this size, and the size is pretty important. I think even just three fames would suffice, but I can't seem to get a satisfactory second frame. Suggestions?

If the perspective looks a little weird, it's supposed to be inset into a wall, viewed from the right of it.

I recently (about a month and a half ago) got my laptop back from Best Buy's service center for warranty-covered work, and it was almost better than the day I bought it. Skip ahead about a month, I have these awesome little artifacts appearing and dancing all over my desktop. I restart. Now I get the confetti right at the XP welcome screen, and it freezes before the desktop loads. Back to Best Buy. Now, two weeks later they call to let me know that my hard drive is dead, and they already sent it to the center again for replacement. If would like them to TRY to recover my data it'll run me $85. To TRY. If it's too far gone, my $85 is as well. Now, I had all of my game stuff (a couple designs, a TON of graphics, etc) backed up on a USB key, but my brother needed to use it for some reason I can no longer recall, and I just never resaved the data.

Wow. The only reason I'm pissed instead of just a little depressed is because there's not even an evil person or group to be upset with. It's not my fault (the data loss is, but not everything), it's not my brother's fault, Best Buy, or even HP. It's been almost three years, and I really used the hell out of it.

I don't know what I expect to come from this, but I'm solo in the apartment right now, and I've got to tell SOMEBODY.

I'm doing a quick low res room escape sort of game, but you're escaping a killing device, so failure means certain death. The only way to get past this is by at least failing once to see the device in action (at least I think. I've been designing this for literally an hour).

What I'm asking here is, would it be too much of a put off to have to fail at least once, but possibly a few times, in order to figure out the device, thus figuring out the puzzle? I should also mention there will be a lull period in the beginning each time to lurk the room and gather a couple items, and that will last as long as it takes to get all of the items, so there will be time to think. I'm just worried about the player getting tired of dying after two play-throughs and giving up.

Any feedback on this, or suggestions of a better way?

General Discussion / Other Indie Game sites
Sat 28/03/2009 20:19:00
I was wondering if anyone knew of other indie game developer forums and such outhside of here. I can't really seem to find what I'm looking for on Google, though I'm sure it's probably my fault =]

I have a board game-esque design, but it got away from me a bit, and I'm not sure AGS is the best thing to make it with. Problem is, I know zip about programming anything in anything, so I don't know what language or whatnot to request help for.

It has chess like moves (different pieces move diferent ways) and it would need a fair enough simulation of AI. I didn't want to post for help with the game if it turns out it dosn't even really belong in AGS. So any ideas on the game itself, or suggestions about other developers forums would be awsome.

Thanks buuuuuuddies.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what isn't matching up between these two sprites.

Any help, or critique, would be welcomed and appreciated.

I feel "done" with this, as I've left it and come back to it a few times, but I'm sure there's something here I need to work on. Color is my main concern, as I have a hell of a time picking a pallette.

I also had a little trouble with the eyes. I could be imagining it.

This is a BG I recently "finished" for a friend's game. I like the layout and overall feel, but I'm a bit of a stickler, so anything ya don't like, let me have it.

This is the first peice I've done in this style, but I like the style alot, and want to see about refining it before moving on in the game.

I'm just curious about this site. I was browsing different free game / demo sites and came across my unfinished game...on http://www.e-revoluce.cz. It dosen't so much matter, the more poeple looking at my game the better, but it's not in english, so I dunno what it says, and I didn't put it there, so I'm curious about my game page's origin on there.

I founsd the button on the site to switch to english, but then I can't find my game. Are there more sites that take (I'm not using that word harshly) games from the WiP thread too? It's kind of cool.

I feel confidant assuming I'm not the only person that believes we are, in fact, not alone out here (being the universe, of course). But the normal malnourished grey guys don't really scare me.

I wanna see some aliens that'd make Ripley pee herself!

EDIT

Color Limts : No limits
Size Limits : Go to town, kids.

And as always, animation would be great, but not a must.

You kids have fun with those pixels now!

I'm wondering what most people do, process wise, for making walk cycles. I won't deny it, I copied (no paintovers though, I'm proud) MrColossal's free walkcycles before, for my game, but it's not helping me at all in a project I'm working on with a friend. Is sketching everything out a common practice, or does eveyone just KNOW where the legs should go next. LoL. I'm so stuck.

General Discussion / Webspace blues
Sat 17/11/2007 01:06:38
Okay, I purchased a bunch of webspace (that 1&1 deal I talked of a few weeks ago if any recalls), and two domains.
My problem is...I haven't a clue what I'm doing. I'm using one of their premade cookie-cutter templates, which is fine, I only need functional at this time.

Problem: They gave me about 120BG of space and 10 FTP accounts. I'm ASSUMING this is the only way to put files (say, ZIPs, for download) on the space I have. I think I set up an FTP account right, but I'm completely at a loss for what to do now. Or does FTP not even work like that? Oiiiiiiii, mah brains!

Thanks to anyone willing to help an uneducated bafoon out.

Click my sig for what I've been able to peice together for the site so far. It's a WiP, that's for sure.

Critics' Lounge / C&C on odd perspective BG
Fri 26/10/2007 06:46:23
OKay, this one has me stumped. The main viewing area will be at the bottom, below the railing. I want to be able to click above everything and have him look up. My problem is I want the perspective to sort of change at the top, like YOUR looking up at it. I tried to tilt the "walkway" up there, but nothing really looked right. (yep, that's supposed to be a walkway.) I'm hesitent to put anymore into the top half of this BG with the perspective possiblty changing drasticly. Other than that, I 'm reletively happy with the bottom.

Conversely, if I decided to kill the odd perspective idea, asuming the topmost walkway ascends (it does), it the perspective okay?

I hate posting something I consider unfinished up here, but I am so stumped.

Thanks in advance.

So I'm looking into getting a website going, and I'm looking at the different options available to me. So far, I like the looks of 1&1.com , but I was wondering if anyone with more experience would have a different opinion of it.
I'm looking at the HOME account

I'm not experienced AT ALL in web design or using any features listed. I know what some are, but never used any. I know RSS is associated with doing pod casts, for instance, and that interests me.

So other than that, are those useful features at that price?

UPDATE! - July 16, 2009

I've started a blog for this, and my other development adventures! It's pretty plain, but it's fun to keep up with.

UPDATE! - July 6, 2009

I'm back on the move with this title, as well as the other title I'm working on, and I've been writing like crazy!
I'm also working on getting my blog started as a sort of joint development diary for both projects, so please keep your eyes pealed! Also, I removed the cast preview, as a couple characters were NOT polished enough to be shown off.

I didn't intend to, but I did the only two backgrounds with little or no walkable area first. Everyone was so helpful with the first, and I think I applied a lot what I picked up here.

This background is INTENTIONALLY oversized a bit, so I am aware of that. The only thing that imediately jumps out at me is the shadows, but when I went back over them they came out almost the same. Are they right and I'm just being hard on myself?

Anything else I'm oblivious to?

EDIT: Now that I look at it, I feel the need to explain the room size... It's the principal's office at the guys high school, and the principal is a little guy with big complex. I'm thinking about making his little feet hang from the chair. ;)

I started working on a compilation cd for some AGS games and demos, and all is going reletively well, except that my Autoplay Interface is hidious. No matter how many magazine cds (which are, of course, my influence here) I put in and look at, I just can't make anything I'm happy with. I dunno if there're better programs for me to try using (I couldn't find anything free as of starting this) or what. I'm using a demo of a program called CD Autorun Creator, but only the demo.

I just have such fond memories of receiving PC Gamer in the mail and popping in the disc to find neat new games. This was the 90s though, so there more than 2 of them on there.

I mentioned this in the Recruit a Team forum, and it made sense to me at the time, but after consideration, I decided I just need opinions and suggestions. Mean while, here's what I've got...

They seem to "work", but I can handle functionallity. I'd like it to look better.

On another note, of the games listed only a couple authors have gotten back to me about distributing the games being OKAY, so that list could always change...

Critics' Lounge / New Sprite

I was looking for movie pics (anyone that's ever read the comics would get why Robert Downy Jr is succch an amazingly accurate and hilarious choice for Ironman) and got a little inspired. I'm still pretty new at this and thought I might seek some outside criticism.

This shooould be much harder than anything for use in my game, so it should be good practice. My next trick... a big daddy from Bioshock. :P

Thanks

Eric
