Messages - The Inquisitive Stranger

#121
Well, way back in 2002, when I announced Cubert Badbone on the AGS forums, I remember there being similar confusion pertaining to whether I should have posted in a different forum. (I think they were structured somewhat differently from now, though.) Oh well. As long as my game gets played and hopefully enjoyed, I'll be satisfied.

So THAT's where she gets her nurse's outfit!

Yeah, at least interface-wise.

Hello, everybody. You may all be pleased (or terrified) to know that I've finally released my latest 2D adventure game, The Game That Takes Place on a Cruise Ship. Although I didn't make it in AGS because I'm a horrible heathen, I think many of you will find it worth downloading and playing, especially if you're a fan of any of my other work (i.e. Cubert Badbone). And even if you aren't, well, play it anyway. You know you want to.

but thankfully helm has played almost every game out there, and knows everything there is to know about everything, so i'll just ask him before i waste my preciousss time on playing a stupid game. in fact, i'm gonna wait for him to make a perfect game, since he knows what he is talking about. i can't wait for the awesome story and deep deep main character.

But Helm doesn't know anything about anything! He's just throwing around meaningless words! Words are useless! Stop overrationalizing! Live in the moment, duuude.

I didn't mean to have this degenerate into a "good game design is a matter of opinion" discussion. I'm seriously curious as to what people think good game design actually is.

After all, in the industry, the prevailing mindset is that a well-designed game is one that sells well...

What is good game design, anyway? Who has the right to define good game design?

I remember this very lucidly, I was playing one of these retarded rpgs and at some point the game tells me 'do you want to help him?' and I was confronted with a YES/NO option. I chose no. The game then tells me 'oh come on, why wouldn't you want to help?' and gives me the original 'choice' again.

Ahaha, that reminds me of this.

(Consequently my upcoming game contains a gag that parodies those silly yes/no option choices where the only real choice you can make is "yes"...)

While we're at it, I wonder what you people would think of this article, especially the part about some games intending for the player NOT to take on the main character's role, as with Tomb Raider.

Yip thats what I thought he was implying, that he found her to be awesomely hot and believes hes just like Harry potter looking.

Hey, Harry Potter's totally hot and you know it.

What do you mean, look beyond appearances? What if she likes the way he looks?

In the end I'm not telling you anything, nor do I think existentialism can be aritculated convincingly. This is an outlet for my own mental masturbation, you see, and I do not really seek to direct you in your life.

Well, that's a relief. The practice of using words to teach someone that words are useless does make me suspicious, after all.

All kinds of heart wounds DO heal.

What about the ones that kill you?

Okay... but how can I know for sure that what you're saying is true and what she's saying is a lie?

But you see, people only tell you to live in the moment when good things happen to you. What if you're at a point in your life where you're lonely and heartbroken? Should you live in the moment then? Huh? HUH?

Well, I suppose you can, but then all you'll do is write angsty poetry all day... which is fun for awhile, but gets old quickly.

But doesn't living in the moment make you suffer as well? I know it did for me at some point...

Just make an effort to be there while everything is going on and not outside the box rationalizing everything and how you're going to talk about it on a message board.

What if it's more natural for you to rationalize everything than it is to be present?

Girls that age might go down one year if the guy is really mature looking...

I did, and even then, it didn't work out. Moral of the story: there's no such thing as being "wise beyond one's years".

Now I wonder whether "a witty saying proves nothing" is also not really a Voltaire quote...

Just use Trillian. Geez.

Let me put it this way: "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
