TALES FROM THE OUTER ZONE:
THE CONSTRUCTION

A gunslinging tale of settlers and zygnoka

The Construction is the fourth episode of Tales From The Outer Zone.
It was made in a couple of weeks for Adventure X Jam 2021.
The theme was "Contact" and we chose the genre "Wild West".

@ Khris - Thank you - and thanks a lot for all the indirect help you gave me through the forums. You seem to answer all my questions. If I look something up, you have a solution somewhere on the forums :D

@Shadow1000 - Thanks, I'm happy it makes people laugh :)

@eri0o - Yup, that is the plan. I do not, however, know how many episodes I will make. The plan is just to make a "remastered" version of all the episodes (polish, bugfixed and voice acting) and release them with a couple of exclusive episodes. Or one long episode. Until then, I will keep making these free episodes from various game jams. This way, I will make up the story along the way  -  everything can happen :)

Thanks everyone :D

I love making these games, so I promise I will make more. It is just a matter of finding the weeks to do it.

@VampireWombat - Animal planet you say.. not a bad idea. Although, all tales are happening on this planet, so it might dictate too much :D

A huge thank you to everyone who voted on Cyborg Seppuku!!

It has been an adventurous year for me. I heard about AGS a year ago, while playing a bunch of short adventure games.
When making my first game Cyborg Seppuku, I immediately  fell in love with the engine. And I can only say the same about the AGS community :D

I hope to continue my Tales From The Outer Zone series soon. If only sleep wasn't necessary..

Cheers

Hi AGS people :)

I made my AGS debut in 2018 with the two short games "Cyborg Seppuku" and "The Goat Crone":

CYBORG SEPPUKU

A cyberpunk tale of marriage and selfdestruction.

You're a cyborg and your wife has left you. To find her you must leave "The Structure" - a dystopian city in which you are imprisoned.
The only way of escaping The Structure is to rid yourself of your implants and become a plain-skin.

The Goat Crone
An occult Christmas tale of family love and dark rituals.

Alma has to prepare the yule ham while her father is out in the forest.
But the nightmarish myth of The Goat Crone haunts her and her baby brother.

@Blondbraid - tak for din kommentar :)
I always liked the idea behind the ending of The Village, but not how it was executed, so when I realized (midway through production) that I was
doing a similar ending, I thought "Ahh.. it's The Village! - Oh well.. I'll try to make a nice version of this great idea".

Good point about the protagonist being a blank slate until you build her/him up - I see the problem.
In The Goat Crone, I wanted the story/character to start off eerie and unpredictable - and that seemed to work :)

Cheers,
Malte

Wow. Playing Christmas games in January feels strange - but I enjoyed them nonetheless :D
Here are my thoughts.

Santa and the Orphanage by Slasher
Spoiler

This game put me in a mood for Christmas.. even in January :D
Not a fan of the auto-items, but the game worked nonetheless.

Really charming little game. Good looking game and a great choice of using felt puppets
for a Christmas game.

Thanks a lot Durq and Creamy! Glad you liked my game.

@Creamy
Forcing the player to behave badly is an interesting topic. The interactive medium can do things other mediums cannot.
I love to explore these areas, so I decided to try it out in The Goat Crone.

I totally understand your opinion - it can feel very strange going against your will in a game.
In The Goat Crone, the player is playing as Alma - it's not a blank slate first person character - it's a character just like
Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. You just click instead of turning the page. So the actions are hers, not yours.

You might get more connected with the character, when you control his/her actions..
This is true, except you don't really control Almas actions, you just play out her actions.
If The Goat Crone offered a choice however, it would feel more like the player's choice than Almas choice.
This would work much better in a RPG for example, than in Tales From The Outer Zone, which is meant to be a linear story with written characters.

Some games have succeeded in doing a mix - like Unavowed. Still, in this kind of game, you don't really play AS the character - they have their own will. And at the same time you sometimes feel that the character is incoherent, as you can manipulate them into doing something out of character.
It is a hard thing to master, but an interesting thing to explore.

Thanks for your comment - Hope this made any sense :)

Happy new year everyone.

Thanks for your kind comments everyone! I expect to make more games in the series this year.

I will play the other two games asap and leave my comments and my vote.

@Cat

Spoiler

Yeah, my game does not exactly look like a Christmas game.. I had to implement the theme in a subtle way, as it had to fit the world of the game. I decided to go for my own version of the old Scandinavian heathen yule traditions instead. The game is a part of a series, so the ending might seem quite strange if you have not played Cyborg Seppuku - the first game. Thanks for your kind comments about the art and music :)

@selmiak - thanks a lot for the let's play!
@Mandle - The plan is to make around 10 episodes. But I dont know when I will have time again for the next episode. We'll see. I aim to make the whole series on game jams. I love how the theme/story of each episode is made in one day, based on the theme of the jam.

I'm happy you enjoy my games :)

My game might be released tomorrow if everything goes well.. maybe the day after.. but hopefully before Christmas.

By the way, I am doing this game full time. I got some money for artistic development, so I spent it on this game.
So actually spend 15 work days on it, and not just doing it on the side.
