General Discussion / Obsidian
Mon 27/03/2023 03:00:52
I've lately come across a quite nice note taking / documentation tool called Obsidian that may be of interest.  It's based on plain text files using Markdown formatting. It features a live preview (WYSIWYG) editor, linking, embedding, etc.  I have been using it to collaborate with colleagues.  We have a vault (i.e. folder tree) on dropbox to which multiple people can simultaneously access and modify. It's not fool proof as content will be lost if people don't take turns editing the same file and allow a few seconds for synchronization.  Images are easily embedded as are external web links.

It could be a good tool for managing and coordinating teams or for documentation.  It takes a little getting used to as the interface is geared more toward keyboard rather than mouse operation.  Think college student, sitting in lecture hall with laptop on lap, taking notes. So there is a little of not knowing how to do this or that at the beginning but is quickly overcome. Plenty of youtube tutorials as well.

Oopsie, I accidently reported eri0o to the mods, ... maybe.  I clicked the MORE button thinking I'd get more buttons to push.  I was actually looking for the LIKE button which I finally found.

And yeah eri0o, I've had that same experience of writing some deep shit in the wee hours and wondering "WTF is this?".  The only thing worse is falling asleep halfway through and waking up not knowing how to finish or to get back to anerror free builds.

I believe having the icon in frame would be a problem in the example Dave Gilbert provided in the thread talking about the magnifying slider.  He has a whole view of the character lying or rolling on the ground rather than standing at the farleft.  In frame would be acceptable if one could drag it around to an ubobstructive location.

The landing page should highlight the three most amazing AGS features, what ever they may be.  For example:

  • Play - Hundres of free games available
  • Make - Create your first game in minutes
  • Join - Great community support

Have two minute videos illustrating each of the three aspects.  People would rather watch than read, especially on mobile.

I found AGS while searching for something else.  It sounded interesting, so I downloaded it (DOS version ;) ) and had a demo game going in about 10 minutes.  The ease and simplicity is what hooked me and I think that's what will hook others  of all stripes.

It's not very often that a new band or musician's cover is better than the original or hit version of a song.  Recently I discovered my new favorite band of musicians "Leonid and Friends" while searching an old song, "Vehicle" on youtube.  Has anyone else made similar discoveries?

QuoteWhile I am always opposed to restricting the freedom of speech of individuals, it is still good to see a more clearly outlined set of rules, and to know that there is readiness in the moderation staff to take action.
I guess it depends what the meaning of "is" is.   One would hope that said rules would be applied equally regardless of political persuasion but that sadly has not always been the case.

You can get a free domain name at Freenom https://www.freenom.com/en/index.html?lang=en  These guys have been around for quite awhile.

Free web hosts tend to come and go here is one you (never used them though) https://www.000webhost.com/.  It would probably work great as a landing page with links to your game's download.  The game files would have to be hosted elsewhere however.  In addition to the sites mentioned above you may want to consider Archive.org as a mirror.

More about the 80/20 rule or the Pareto Distribution here.

Thanks Christian for starting this thread.  This question comes up periodically but usually gets incomplete or inadequate answers.  From your list and the ensuing conversation it's clear that there is a wide range of cost/price, mostly dependent on the skill/experience and motivations of the prospective artist(s).  Your list provides insight and guidance with regard to both buyer and seller expectations.

Somewhat related to this discussion, it's my understanding that illustration of a children's picture book (32 pg) goes for about $1000-$5000 USD.

Everybody expects something of value for their time and effort; it's naive to believe otherwise.  It's irrelevant if value is enumerated in in terms of currency or other means such as recognition, self-satisfaction, pizza, etc.   An inadequate value proposition is the reason there are so many unfinished games here, right?  If there were a $50000 bounty offered for every finished AGS game, how many do you really think would go unfinished?

QuoteNeeds more cores, I think. Have you considered quad-SLI graphics cards?
No but I'm thinking of using motherboard that accommodates 8 CPUs.   So that would be like 800 cores and 1600 threads.  Of course that would require, like,  a jiga-byte of ram and hyper-ventilated coolers, you know, to get the full advantage.

Well, it's that time of year to get a new development computer.  Here are the CPU specifications of the new unit.  Let me know what you think.   (laugh)

CPU Features and Full Specification

  • Cores: 100
  • Threads: 200
  • DDR5 RAM support: Sure, probably
  • Base clock: 1.4 PHz
  • Overclock capable, but doing so might create a small black hole inside your CPU (and void your warranty)
  • PCIe Lanes: 28. Oh you're really gonna use more? Please...
  • Socket LGA1151 compatible. We're as surprised as you are
  • RGB lighting capable

Has anyone used DragonBones animation editor and if so what do you think of it?

How about allowing the player to set government policies at beginning of game, select player character, and then play to succeed at the PC's profession.  It would be interesting to see the effect of different combinations of policies on different professions.

I use 7-Zip.  It integrates right into windows explorer and is only a right click away.

Also, it should probably be responsive for mobile devices.
