Neil Dnuma... now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time...
Yup, it's been a few years... Just suddenly started thinking of pixels and this place again, and went by to have a look:) And then the background blitz showed up... had to give it a shot! BTW nice to see you're still around!

Votes:
Concept: It's hard to decide, because there were so many good entries. I have to go with abstauber. It's great in so many ways. Very detailed and exciting, with masterful color use. Every background does well here, but among with abstauber, I feel the hellish piece by Kastchey and the weird world created by reiter deserves a mention!
Playability: Again, every piece works well. I'm giving it to abstauber for great variance in possibilities. Lorenzo's could also work on several levels (different floors and levels of depth), and Jack's piece has both details up front and great depth to it.
Artistic Execution: Kastchey because it's damn great and he deserves a point. Great atmosphere from just a handful of colors. Otherwise abstauber's is of course worth mentioning here as well. I also admire the line work of lorenzo, great style. Reiter has some nice details, especially the barge and that little camera, nicely pixelled. Jack builds some great atmosphere not least from a creative lighting choice. And DBoy is onto something with those interesting shapes. I'd love to see more details on that. Great work everyone, I wish there were more categories to hand out points in... :)

Nice work!

I played around with this one (and messed it up a bit), to try to give a few ideas on how to increase the sense of depth, mostly by changing the color scheme, desaturating elements in the distance. I also added some reflection.

For lighting I did almost what Progz did. I'm unsure of the blue in the shadow areas though, unless there's other light sources than the torches (an offscreen window or somehing). I assumed it wasn't. The contrast is a bit too much now, I'll admit, but I wanted to show some other natural places to add a little more shadow.

I feel you've used the line tool quite a bit in the painting, a lot of the edges along the walls and doors were very straight, so I tried to make some of them a touch more organic, most visible in the foreground walls. Also, the area were the big door meets the floor; it was in perfect line with the wall on the sides, where normally I'd be a touch further back.

The whole thing feels a bit to schematic, as if it were built in a level designer or something, with perfectly symmetric square rooms. If you're creating more rooms, perhaps you could look into some more exciting ways to arrange them.

I do love the retro look, and the statue is really nice.

Lovely scene!

Sorry about the messy edit - not enough time. I tried to get rid of some of the flatness by enhancing contrast (and give things more shape) in certain areas. I also felt the lighting scheme was a bit random (isn´t the house fully in the shade..?) and the composition could use some more "air".

Idea: Misj'. I like it. So much that my idea really is just a different version of it... The only thing I didn't like is that you're explaining it in the post... there's no need to, it's crystal clear :) Puddin'; I really didn't quite get your idea, so I feel I cannot vote for it. The animation (which is smooth) made me think of American Beauty of all things.
Atmosphere: Misj'. I like that you're experimenting with your style, even when you master the cartoonish style so well. I like how the colors work here.
Design: Misj' The cliffs, mountains and trees are ace. I kinda wish the tree in the foreground was more like the others... in honesty the foreground layer is the least exciting. But the image might benefit from that, the eyes are quickly dragged towards the house.
Composition: Misj'
Functionality: Privateer Puddin' I think the retro-style is very well done, down to the old-school well-sized walkable areas. Btw, I think the 2nd image works best, when the lower part is cropped off by the interface.
Technique:Misj' I think your experimenting was successful, and I hope you'll do more!

My creativity flew out the window. Another house.

I liked all the entries (my own not so much), but felt in the end it was between ProgZmax and Loominous. I liked ProgZ whole fresh idea, but fell for Loominous' style in the end, so I will vote for his Mrs McPip (her opponent is great too!).

Congrats on winning the animation award! I watched the ceremony on television some days ago.

Well deserved!

(I hope it's ok to dig up threads when someone win awards and are on television)

I tried reducing the saturation and also contrast of the background, by adding some color perspective (and fog..). I felt the blacks in the far distance reduced the feeling of depth, and thought it might - as a bonus - help bring out the character more (which I sloppily gave even more contrast)

Very quick job, and exaggerated, but hopefully of some help.

BTW, this game project sounds very interesting!

I'd change the house a bit if I were you, it's now almost excatly like the the one in Psycho, that house is so iconic, and brings too many associations. Unless that's what you're after of course.

Nice pixelling.

I'm not really sure you can compare

?

Apart from that, zyndikates entry is pretty amazing and if I could draw like that I'd probably go highres too ;)

Hi, I'm sorry if it came out as if I was favoring Zynd's background because of it's higher resolution. I think he had the best idea, it has a very original twist while the other two BG's have scenarios I've seen before. I also think it was the most functional background - such clear walkable areas and exits. I adored your go with the very limited palette and think you pulled it off well, it has atmosphere and looks quite good. I think the copying of houses are a little too apparent, and that also gives some slight inconsistence with the perspective. Also, I find the tree to be very generic, and believe it could have looked a little more exiting. But great job, and I am sure you are more than talented enough to give high-res a go if you wanted. Looking forward to seeing more of your work :)

BTW. I prefer the Indy BG of those two! I think the colors (and light effects) could have looked better in the other.

There used to be a design category too, where did that one go?

Anyways, I think all three BG's were good, but in all honesty, and IMO; zynd was ahead in all categories.
