Wonder if anyone else received a message from this user in October? The message was "hey can i hire you for game?". Seemed a bit out of the blue since I've not been active for a while and he has no posts. Can't imagine anyone wanting to hire me!

The name’s Frank, I’m a member of the local crime family, The Malones, well I say family but it’s just me, ever since I sent my brother Frank to the klink... So being the only mobster in town’s pretty good, don’t have to pay no cut, don’t need to worry about some cugine whackin the wrong guy. Business is easy, quiet… At least until I got that phone call…

The guy on the other end was an old goombah of mine named Johnny Snappers, they called him that cause he’s always snapping his fingers. The Yakuzas cut out his tongue, good job I know morse code...
Turns out the families need a neutral place to talk, they chose my turf…I figure the best place is Chef Lucca’s restaurant, I’ll tell him to keep his nudist brother away, these guys are pretty old fashioned...

The three great mobster families are coming, The Calzones speciality is smuggling, you could never tell what was in that filling until you ripped open that bready crust. The Spaghettis liked prostitution, but the meat of their operation was in drugs. Now the Lasagnes, they had a multi layered operation, had an interest in pretty much everything.

So today’s the big day, now I don’t know how well it’s going to go, but I know when Calzones, Lasagnes, and Spaghettis get in the same room... it’s delicious!

All using AGS, just choose some colours, splodge pixels and circles randomly, then overlay a planet shaped "cut-out" sprite. Was originally going to do something fancy with cellular automata but just using the drawing functions works nicely.

Say I have an array myArray[10] that might have any numbers in, but let's say: [0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9], how might I go about randomly shuffling those numbers in a new array?

It's been too long since I've finished a project, even though it's a small one, I enjoyed the process.
I'm releasing it before the deadline because I'll be too busy this week, but I consider it complete.

Warning: No saving system, this might be a bit controversial, but due to the short length of the game I didn't bother.

Every now and then I'll go and help my Dad clear things out of his loft, it's slow progress, there was a mountain of stuff to begin with. I'm surprised my sister's ceiling didn't collapse on her! My Dad's not a hoarder, but he liked to "rescue" electronics. Before he retired his work would sometimes involve clearing out offices and schools of equipment, he would bring a lot of things home. Also anytime my family updated our equipment the old stuff would go in the loft. I remember one time he found a 24 port network switch and used it for a while, only 2 of the 24 ports were in use, the only computers in my house at the time were mine and my fathers! Pretty sure the router comes with 4 ports!

First day we pulled down (I am not joking) 2 CRT portable televisions, 1 flat screen TFT monitor, and 18 CRT Monitors! There must have been around 10 PCs of various ages, some had the name of a school printed on the side.

Before we started clearing out if there was anything I thought about looking for, this was not possible. So I've slowly been recovering artefacts to tickle my nostalgia. One time I was very pleased to recover my Dreamcast with games such as Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Chuchu Rocket and  crazy taxi.

Today we managed to pull out the Amiga 500, Amiga 1200, lots of floppy disks, and some old PC games.



There's tons more floppy disks, a lot of pirated stuff to, I'm sorry to say I did not own legitimate copies of the Monkey Island series!! Sorry Ron!

If I try to draw something outside of a drawing surface, say -100 on the x axis obviously the player will never see it. But I just wondered if doing this causes any problems or slow downs, does AGS even try to do something about it?

I have 320 x 200 room but my tile based game is just using this surface as a camera, so my "room" is bigger than this and I loop through all the tile data drawing them based on the player's location, so you get tiles outside of this surface.

Now I don't actually have a problem, when I loop through the tile array I can simply just check if it would potentially be drawn outside the surface, then don't call the drawing function for that tile. There will be times when partial sprites are drawn off of the surface edge however.

So again I'm not having an issue really, I was just curious if drawing outside of the surface area is bad, could potentially cause slow downs, or AGS simply doesn't do anything.

My wife is trying to get me to sign up for some of these courses but I'm reluctant. I rang them up asking about https://www.itonlinelearning.com/product/new-to-it/ the woman on the phone immediately discounted by £100 if I signed up today... :-\ Just being nice or just wanting me to not think about it for them to take my money?

My wife seems to think that I can walk into a £30,000 a year job which I find extremely doubtful. The company promises a job at the end of it, but I can imagine being sent to some call centre or something.

I did do some a levels in ICT after school but I didn't care or try then, got a C/D. I've always been interested in computers and am always helping people with theirs. If I had applied myself then no doubt I would have scored a higher mark. But I was young and stupid then.

I've dredged through Google looking for people talking about the site, lots of 5 star reviews which is always suspicious. The odd forum post where older IT blokes talk them out of doing it.

I'm concerned that these qualifications aren't worth the paper they're printed on, the site doesn't exactly scream that exams are extra, around £150 range each I think.

My wife is giving me a really hard time about getting a new job with more family time, I work weekends and my oldest has just started full-time school. I do like my current job (Baker - completely unrelated to IT).

That lady's going to ring me back Monday.

Do you ever find yourself banging your head on that coding problem, staring at the screen and closing the computer off in frustration, then you go to bed. The moment you wake up the solution is there, it just pops in! Or you could be out for a walk or at work, not even thinking about coding, it just pops in!

Does this mean that there is a subconscious part of your brain running through lines of code that you've written the day before? Or have the coding Muses taken pity?

I accidentally tried to upload a 150x150 sized image (instead of 120) as my forum avatar and now it won't let me have one at all! (laugh)

I'm interested to know what the differences are. When I use the first one; In my code I'm treating it as a constant, to avoid magic numbers. Is that the correct use? Are there any advantages (such as memory usage)?

I've long fantasised about making a webisodic adventure game, kind of like a playable webcomic. It would be playable in the internet browser.
The average webcomic tends to be released weekly, ranging from a few panels to a page. They're short and funny.

To avoid embarrassment:
    I'd plan several episodes to be part of a season, all the games in the season would be more or less finished before episodes started to be released.
    Each season could be a self contained story so I'm not making a long term commitment.

If there was such a thing as a playable webcomic:
    How long would you expect gameplay to last?
    How often should a webisode be released?
    How many puzzles in one game?
    How many episodes in a season?

Advanced Technical Forum / void vs function

I've never used void before, and was curious when I saw it in another thread. My basic understanding is that it works like a function but you don't return a value. But I've written plenty of functions that don't return values.

So what's the advantages of using void? Does it matter if I stick to regular functions?
Hopefully not embarrassing myself here, sometimes I need stuff explaining in a certain way for me to get it.

We have a thread about "What grinds my gears" so I thought it would be interesting to do one about the opposite!

Every pay day I have Chinese takeaway, there's a place that's only a two minute walk from my house so I always go there. It's not much to look at, it's a house on a regular street that's been converted into a place of business. It's not a restaurant you can sit and eat in, there's just a little waiting room with a couple of worse for wear deck chairs.

Now here's the silly little pleasure, I could have rang ahead and lessened the wait, I could have ordered from a better place that's further away and had it delivered. But through a door you can catch a glimpse of the kitchen, hear the oil sizzling and the pots clanging, smell the food! There's also a man who sings in his own language as he works, but the silly little pleasure doesn't last long! This is fast food after all...
