Thanks for the tips! I've looked for similar communities in the past but never was able to find any. I'll definitely post on those three sites right away. ;)

Lol...well, there's no budget as far as reimbursing folks for their efforts. When you're dealing with 13-year-olds, you can't really expect much in that respect.  ::)

Hey, a foot-in-the-door opportunity!

Text-based steampunk, huh. Sounds interesting. Can you give me an idea of the mood of the game? (e.g. time is running out before the time bomb in my briefcase goes off / what an awesome place / wandering around curiously)

Also, how many tracks are you needing?

It's volunteer, as far as I know. But good question; I should have mentioned that in the first post.

Alright, before you volunteer, let me inform you what you're getting into.

There's a video game called Spore. Like AGS, it has its own forum. Some of the kids there are making a full-blown movie using the video game. The movie is cursed with the unfortunate title "Hugmonster: The Movie". The hugmonster is some warped, evil race of things that desire to destroy the rest of the universe.

I told the kids I'd help out with their movie, so I'm doing storyboarding for them and possibly a bit of voice acting.

Now's the part where you come in-- we've found that the vast majority of the video game forumers are male. This poses a problem, since half the cast is female.

We're needing several females for main characters and minor characters, and we're considering outsourcing females with Adobe Reader's built-in voice or with Microsoft Jenny.

Save females from outsourcing!

If interested (and no one here has to know you're helping out a group of kids with a low-budget film, simply visit the link below (you'll need to register at the forum there to join).

http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/59396.page

If you've never voice acted before, or if you're well-seasoned, this is an opportunity to get your name out to a new audience.

Edit: This is volunteer, don't expect to be paid. Your reward is the warm feeling that comes from helping kids do something.

Hi y'all, I decided to play around with Audacity today to see what sort of music I could create using a fiddle and my mouth...and I'll give you a sample of both. These were some pretty quick jobs-- if there's any demand for this sort of music, I will definitely use a bit better recording and composing techniques (this was thrown together in about 20 minutes on the way out the door to get to work).

These are copyrighted Rob Schnautz 2010:

Asian-sounding music I played on the fiddle

some festive Spanish-sounding whistling

Let me know if you'd be interested in having me put some music together for you.

I have LOTS of ideas....I compose regularly (though I rarely write any of it down, so most of it just gets forgotten).

Also available for voice acting...got 5 years experience as a puppeteer now.

Wasn't there a rule against using applications besides MS Paint?  As in no copying images from the Internet?

translation:

If you need a game translated from German to English, email me at oddseagames@gmail.com.  Note, however, that I'm not good at translating from English to German, as is probably obvious in the example above.

Experience: I translated an entire Asterix und Obelix comic book from German to English in high school.

I use the Bantam New College German/English Dictionary for translating, as I don't trust Babelfish.

About the ones that didn't play correctly...this was an error on my end, not yours.  I had my sound driver set to play at a frequency it was incapable of.  Just now fixed that when I realized it was messed up.

A critique from a musician.  I love music, and actually memorized the music from games like KQ and MI, as well as Jurassic Park, Incredible Toon Machine, Beyond Atlantis, the Mario Bros. series, and countless others.  Remember you're being compared to games that won awards for their music, and don't be offended by this critique.

1 is rather interesting.  It sounds tropical, but I don't think that's how H2G2 starts.

I'd make tracks 2, 3, 6 a bit longer.  Otherwise, musically inclined people will notice it looping.

I love the sound of 7.  It sounds so young and alive, like a nursery.  It could probably stand to be a bit longer, too.

8 feels like it's looping.  Then it changes and loops WAY too long.  But I love the military sound to it.

9...ha!  It's Hey Jude!  Only problem with this is that Apple Records holds rights to this song, so I think you'd need permission to use it.

10...wow.  The fade in sure is annoying.  You've got the right idea, but maybe it needs to fade in a little less or even fade back out occasionally.  Sounds like it's looping after awhile.  The same progression keeps repeating, and it's only 16 notes long.  the third minute loops again....oo, I like the modulation at the end of it.

11 cool.  It could use some more variation, but it's a start.

12 Here we go with loops again.  Not many notes and very short.

13 Woah.  What is that?  That's not a MIDI, and it sounds out of place in this soundtrack.  I'm guessing the game is supposed to have better graphics than the 2005 remake.  The music should match the graphics.  This music matches high quality graphics, and the MIDIs match low-res old VGA graphics.

16 Unpredictability is good!  Not too distracting, either.  Note that this would loop awkwardly, since the beats cut out like that.

17 Short.  Way too short.  It will loop.

18 Sounds looped.  It's a start, though.

19 Too short again.

21 Sounds good.  Really good.  You might consider a different chord progression occasionally, though.

22 Awesome.  Hmmm....there must be a cutscene here?  If not, the unsubtle change in atmosphere will be awkward during gameplay.

23 Weird sound, but I like it.  I like how the parts where the music cuts out kind of wakes you up for a second.  Looping isn't bad at all on this one, since the portion being repeated is a considerable length (as opposed to the 16 notes found in many of the others).  I like the feeling it gives you that you'd better hurry up before someone finds you doing what you shouldn't be doing.

24 Ouch!  Static!  Is that supposed to be music?  I think you must have made a mistake here.  Technical problems.  Don't publish that one.

26 Looping too quickly again.  And for far too long.  Why did you bother to make that one longer than five seconds?  It would loop on its own, you know.

27 Chord progression loops a bit too quickly.  This song has a long way to go before it becomes pleasant to listen to.  The smearing makes it more difficult on the ears.

28 There's that fading again. And the quickly looping chord progression for too long.  Hint: it takes more than two chords to write an instrumental song.

29 What A Wonderful World.  With too much fading.  Appropriate song, but Keen Records holds the copyright yet on this one; you'll need permission.

30 Another technical problem here. Static.

32 Ambience.  Nice.  Ambient tracks should always be at least three minutes before they loop back to the beginning (no looping in the middle).  There's a bit too long of a pause between the chords struck in the middle of the song.  Cut that pause in half.  And don't loop those two chords for more than ten seconds they become annoying after that.

33 Short; it'll loop fast.

34 Neat.  Reminds me of King's Quest VI.  VERY well done.  The part from 2:10 to 2:26 doesn't belong in this piece.  3:12...and...cut.  Get rid of the rest...it doesn't fit and doesn't even sound enjoyable.  Make these cuts and this track is perfect.  It's enjoyable and not too random or boring.

Sorry I'm such a critic, but I'm a musician.  I notice these things.

The Vikings found it first.  I forget whether it was Erik Lief or Eric the Red.  But they also discovered Greenland and Iceland and gave them names that were ironic, which confused the daylights out of the guys chasing them.

I'll listen to it later.  Downloading it right now.

Edit: How do I play an OGG file?

I've been thinking, how difficult would it be to implement an 'If you liked this game, you'll also like...', or just a 'similar games' reference in the new games page? I think that it would help people find games that are of interest to them that they may not find through a word-based search.

Basically, my thought is to group games with a similar theme - medieval comedy with medieval comedy, sci-fi suspense with sci-fi suspense, etc. For example, someone who's played them both may draw a parallel to The Vacuum and 7 Days a Skeptic, since they're both sci-fi suspense thriller type games, but unless I knew about both, it'd be hard to know that one is similar to the other. It could help some less well-known games get a little more recognition.

I know that we already have games sortable by genre, but oftentimes people search for specific titles, and some cross-promotion could certainly help, I think. If not specific games, even a button to 'Find more Sci-Fi Horror titles', for example, may be handy. Does anyone agree with me that this might be a useful feature?

I love it!  To implement this, each forum member could maintain a checkbox-style list on their profile of their favorite games, which in turn would be analyzed by a feature similar to Amazon/eBay.  For each game profile, it would come up with a list of about ten or so games that appear most frequently in favorite game lists containing that title.

As the legend goes, he was concerned the King himself wouldn't be able to read it, since he had poor vision.

Thanks for the link.  It's good to actually see some figures.  :)

You might try a library.  The library in my town has two copies of it (unfortunately, they're so scratched up I had to borrow BOTH copies to play it, as neither let me access the entire game).

Has anyone had what they would consider a success in selling them recently?  If only about twenty people buy a $10 game, it's hardly worth the effort in the first place.
