General Discussion / Re: Lurkers
Wed 18/04/2007 05:40:47
I've become a bit of a lurker so I guess I'll post and break the stretch of silence.
I used to be around quite a bit a few years ago.  Let's see... It's probably been 3 years now because I registered 4 years ago and started hanging around more about a year after I did... ANYWAY.  I still stop by from time to time to see who's still around and how the gaming is going (I've noticed a lot of people shining up their skills over time, definitely a lot of great work going on).  I haven't posted myself in a long time, though.  Maybe I should do more of that.
Anyway, this is still a great community, as it has always been.  I think that's why it keeps so many people around...and why so many lurkers like stopping by.  A lot of great games are dreamed up and created here, and that's wonderful.

To make it short and sweet: hello again from a long ago frequenter, and good work to all you members (and lurkers--who need to join and share the work!) out there making games.   :)

General Discussion / Unexpected promotions
Thu 06/01/2005 05:02:24
I think I mentioned to a few fellow AGSers (a very long time ago) that I'm a journalist for my school's newspaper staff.Ã,  Ã, Actually, I was associate editor for over a year.Ã,  But the thing is, a day or two ago, I was informed that the editor-in-chief couldn't handle it anymore (she was stressing out from not knowing the how to use the new program or something) and she wanted out--so now I've been promoted to the head editor, which is something I never expected to happen in the timeframe that it has.Ã,  (I didn't expect to become editor-in-chief until next year, at the earliest.)
I was just wondering if anyone else has had any unexpected experiences like that.Ã,  Some sort of promotion from out of the blue, or just something random happening that you never thought you'd be part of.Ã,  I think they could be interesting to hear about if you have...

I don't want to be mean, hun, honestly I don't but a seven hour span with no answers isn't that big a deal.Ã,  AGS is worldwide, remember?Ã,  Someone who knows the most and can best critique what you wrote may be in another timezone where it's 4 AM and they've been sleeping.Ã,  After 7 DAYS of no posts, then you might want to think about no one wanting to give an opinion.Ã,  But not after 7 hours.
Anyway, I see a few grammar mistakes and small stuff like that, but I think it possesses possibility.Ã,  I'd have to read more, but so far it's pretty interesting and it's becoming intriguing.Ã,  What I want to know is: what could be a more uncomfortable Christmas than that?

I'm not sure exactly what it is you've already done, but maybe this thread can help you out a little. http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=10644.0Ã,  If it doesn't be sure to let me know and I'll see what else I can do.

General Discussion / Re: New Years Resolutions
Sun 02/01/2005 05:49:43
I haven't posted in awhile, but this seems like a good one to get back in the swing of things with.
Besides resolving to finish one of the many games I started last fall and never quite completed, this year's resolution would have to be to make a little more time for myself and learn to tell other people no.Ã,  I'm volunteered for everything that has to be dealt with regarding my journalism staff because I'm the associate editor and we can't expect our editor-in-chief (or the staff writers) to actually do anything themselves, can we?Ã,  Ã, ::)Ã,  So I always have a stack of extra work to do that could easily be divided up amongst everyone else and accomplished much more quickly.Ã,  I don't know how many days I've pulled on two hours of sleep because I was doing something that someone else could be doing--all because they didn't feel like doing it themselves.Ã,
So yes, my resolution is to put a stop to that kind of thing and actually have some time for doing other stuff--like finishing that novel I'm writing or even my first game for AGS.Ã,  :)

I'm diabetic, as well. Ã, I've had it since I was a little under three. Ã, Sugar itself doesn't really affect mine (which probably seems a little odd, yet is true), but starchy foods that turn into sugar do, so I have to watch about eating too much stuff like potatoes and bread and such.
After I started high school, I got in with a whole new group of friends than the ones I'd had from childhood, and half those friends truly had no idea that I was diabetic until I told them. Ã,
It's not a hard thing to manage, though insulin shots aren't exactly fun. Ã, You do get used to those after awhile, however, and there's always the option of a pump.
I forgot about keytones, man. Ã, Sorry. Ã, Those are definitely something she should watch, SSH. Ã, Did the doctor give her a list of the best stuff to eat to keep those down?
Anyway, I hope your wife feels better soon. Ã, Diabetes is sometimes a little hard to accept, but if she has to do it, I'm sure she'll have no problems adapting to it. Ã, It doesn't actually require a 360 degree lifestyle change like most people would think.

Hints & Tips / Re: The damm door in Apprentice
Sat 17/07/2004 06:06:19
There was a secret puzzle that Geoffkhan included in an update.Ã,  For awhile there was even a contest going on to see who could discover it.Ã,
http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=7231.60Ã,  Post 68 is the official release of it and http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=7;action=display;threadid=7729;start=msg95274 is the spoiler thread for it.

What have you already done in the game?Ã,  You know, where have you been and what do you have in your inventory?Ã,  I don't want to attempt to tell you what to do until I know what you've already completed.

I don't know if you've seen this or not but it's by the game's creators, so it might help a little: http://herculeaneffort.adventuredevelopers.com/apprentice%20walkthrough.html

A good first try!Ã,  I noticed a few things you might want to alter but it wasn't a bad game overall.Ã,  Good job.
Spoiler
A few of the halls and openings are hard to find.Ã,  For example, when you're in the kitchen with the cook you can't tell that there are openings leading off to other areas.Ã,  They just look like corners of the room.Ã,  I don't know if you'd want to add some shadows to show that they're hallways or if you'd want to draw arrows pointing at them, but you might want to do something.
Also when you first enter the kitchen, if you look at the chef it talks about the sleeping pills.Ã,  That's a minor little thing that doesn't really make a difference, but you might want to consider fixing it for future playing fun.

Again, a good first effort.Ã,  Just work on your animations a little more (and the openings, of course ;)) and you'll do very well with your sequel, I'm sure of it.Ã,
Good luck, and welcome to AGS.Ã,  :)

Okay, here's what I think is happening.Ã,  (I could be wrong, I don't know, I'd have to see it.)Ã,  If you're getting a box that says "Please insert a disk into drive A and try again" with a choice to either cancel or retry, try clicking cancel.Ã,  From there it should give you the little "save as" pop-up box and you just adjust the box's settings to wherever you want the file to go.
If you've already tried that maybe someone else knows what's going on, but that was the only solution I could think of right away.
Good luck with this.Ã,  I know how frustrating it can be.Ã,  Bear with it; I'm sure you'll figure it out soon.

Sorry.  It's explained so much better than I did in the next post.  Just listen to that one

*edit*  Squinky, I realized that and I changed it right as you posted which was really weird.  It does get a little confusing, doesn't it?  Thanks for your clarification, though.  I wouldn't want to send someone on a wild parrot chase.

Monkeybrains:
Spoiler
In the apartment building where the professor lives, go through the first door.  The room looks kind of freaky, right?  Well at the end of the little pathlike area that runs up the middle, there's a hotspot.  You need to click it.  See how things go from there.  :)

I loved this game, Fred.  :D  I haven't had this much fun fighting evil in a long time!
You did a great job, and I hope to see more at a later (or sooner) date.  :)

QuoteHehe, i finished it with no help in 2 hours :)
:P

I just meant we actually had to think about some of these puzzles.  Most of them are average, but there are those odd few that take brain work.
I really didn't mean ALL seasoned gamers (it took me about three hours when I played it), I was just trying to find a nice way to say don't be discouraged.   :)
Oh!  And I still mean that: Don't be discouraged.  You just have to play enough for it to become second nature to you to know when to do something.
Bestowers truly is a great game, though I still think it's a harder one to start out with.  But I guarantee, it can be played even at the beginner stage.  Good luck, guys.  Ask when you have questions.

You have to do things you never thought possible.  :)  Anything goes here in an AGS game, as soon as you know that you're all set.
It's been a while since I've played this game, but what do you have in you inventory?  Maybe we can figure something out from there, and if I don't know what to tell you after that, I'm sure someone else will.
Bestowers is an (I'll say advanced due to lack of better term) game and it made even the more seasoned gamers give things a little thought, so don't be discouraged if you can't quite figure something out.  We're here to help when we can.
Welcome to the community.  :)

I told you it was still small.  :)
It's not my site, but Matt (the owner) just started it up a day or two ago, so for now I can find the low count understandable.  Every forum has to start somewhere, right?
I wouldn't be promoting it if I didn't think it had possiblity.  He really had a good idea when he started this place so I'm trying to help him out.
And as Kairus said, stay tuned.
You never know where it'll go.

There's a new website, just starting up, that is entirely politics related.  I don't want to spurn any big political discussions on the board here, but I was asked to put the word out and I thought posting the link here would be a good bet.
With this site, someone will post an article (kind of like an online newspaper) about something happening in the world today and there are forums where views on the topic can be shouted at or agreed with or whatever.  I think it's going to turn out to be a really good place to talk about all things political, and maybe even a real eye-opener for some people.
Most of the topics will probably be US point of view, but I think everyone will have something to say about whatever the writers decide to post there.
Here's the link: http://www.torvusfuturus.tk.
Sorry to use the forums here as advertisement, but I really do think that some of you might find it interesting once it's completely up and running.  Like I said, right now it's just starting up and there are only a few members but maybe a few of you can change that...

That's some of the best work I've read in a long time, Flippy.  Excellent job.  I want to read more sometime.
