Gotta catch 500+!

Yeah, I'm shamelessly a Pokémon fan (haven't watched much of the TV branch but love the games). Yet following the unveiling of Pokémon Black and White I'm unsure where the franchise is heading.

The reason is simple. Time and time again Nintendo has failed to produce an original storyline - every game they recycle the same old plot devices. It got boring after the 3rd generation. And, even simpler, there are too many pokémon. Something can only be quirky and original if it is orginal. There will soon be over 500 pokémon, and the artist's imagination peaked in the 3rd generation. Why don't you see for yourself. They aren't a patch on the originals. What the producers need to focus on is reusing the pokémon; but not the story.

So please, Nintendo... STOP MAKING POKÉMON before you KILL THE FRANCHISE!

Edit: On second thoughts, the pokémon Hihidaruma looks pretty neato! But Gear? Are you serious?

Spoiler
THE REST SUCK.

As far as I can see it, they killed it many years ago.

If you'd ask me they already did :P
They should have sticked to 151, the later pokémon have serious style inconsistencies and look more like plastic statues then something that resembles animals. As for the animated series, well I like the first two seasons, but everything after that was rubbish. In the original story line they let us know there are only 150 Pokémon discovered (in the world), there might be more, although in later stories there are much more, and they have been there for ever. That is a huge story inconsistency that bothered me much. They could have increased depth of the story so much; for instance the origin of the Pokémon (in the first story there are some hint there might be some source in outer space) that would have lead to interesting saga. Well, instead they reused the first story over and over. A pity.
Life is like an adventure without the pixel hunts.

wtf, that's like telling all creatures to stop evolve and sience to stop finding new things. New pokemons please, and more paper figures too please! www.pokemonpapercraft.com

More team rocket please....

I got away from this series a while ago, but I assume the 500+ figure assumes the player will transfer their previous collection, in which case it does make some sense.

However I do agree that the design team lost it a while back, although that's partly because the original set pretty much covered a large chunk the animal kingdom.

I fail to see how these are better or worse than the originals, really.

Yeah, "creativity" and "randomness" are often confused in the Pokemon world. We had a walking acorn, 3 floating spheres with faces...2 connected gears is really not very farfetched (and yes, that is pun).  :P
I don't want the world, I just want your half

I often thought that until I clicked on AtelierGames' link (just right now) and realized that one actually only knows the "plastic-looking" ones because they seem to be the only ones that Nintendo shows in the ads and on the posters, because they would be the... "coolest" (  :-X ) ones.

Yeah, that's true. But the producer still reuses the pattern. Every game you get three new bird pokémon, a chain of insect pokémon, a rat looking pokémon etc... it would be fine if the new pokédex wasn't predictable, but what can you do? They're up to 500 and I think they've run out of ideas.

Would you please expand?

What I'm saying is that if you make a list of ten random Pokemon, mixing five old ones and five new ones, then I will surely not be able to reliably pick the five old ones out of the list,  (except if they're iconics like Pikachu, of course), and I suspect neither will anyone else who hasn't played the games extensively.

In order to collect all 500 Pokemon, wouldn't you have to separately buy each game in the series? That's how they make their money!
