Hi,
I do realize that this problem has been mentioned before on these forums, but in none of the topics searched I have found answers I'm looking for...

I've just been offered a great business deal- if I can put the Russian translation into my game Downfall I can distribute it as a BOXED copy on the territory of Russia. That's awesome, isn't it? :) The problem is, I'm not Russian myself and I have no idea how to do it. I imported some fonts into the game that are apparently Russian cyrilic, but they look like normal fonts in AGS and the random Russian text I pasted in the game is being displayed as ???????. Please, somebody help me! I really don't want to lose this deal!!!!

AGS won't support cyrilic characters without a serious amount of work on your part.

AGS supports only a very limited number of characters.  Look on a font screen inside AGS.  That's how many you have to work with.

If you type
Code: ags
cCharacter.Say("Д");
into AGS, it will display ? or something because it doesn't support that ASCII value.  So you need to substitute every letter you want to display with a 0-255 ASCII.

To do this, you'll have to open up a font editor and replace the characters that you can see on the AGS font screen with your Cyrillic letters.  Then, you'll have to type out the russian translation, but substitute every letter for its corresponding 0-255 ASCII letter.

For example, if you put the character Д in the font slot replacing the letter D, then you'll have to do a find/replace on your translation document that changes all the Д's into D's.  Then when you type
Code: ags
cCharacter.Say("D");
AGS will load up the font slot for D, and will display the letter Д that you replaced it with.  Does that make sense?

Your translation document will end up looking like a mess of unreadable words, but when filtered through the font that you created, it will read perfectly.

Thanks for your reply... But it's sad news really. I don't think I will be able to do it then. Without the knowledge of the language it will be even trickier... It's a shame there isn't a module or something that'd solve the problem.

In this thread they make it look so easy:

I've done what the guy says, replaced my current font with the one he made and it's still looking like normal fonts in AGS... If only I could get in touch with that Sledge guy...

What's your problem exactly?
As far as I understand, there're some problems displaying Russian translation, which already exists?
Or now it just wishful?

The way proposed by Vince Twelve is a basic workabout on this issue, but it will create LOADS (sorry my caps) of problems for the actual translator.
Because there are some fonts which can be used correctly and smoothly witihn AGS.
I'm sure on it, because now I'm working with Le Woltaire translating his A Second Face, and we found fine working solution.
So, if the problem in fonts - I can easily share them with you.
(btw, do you need Russian translator? :-) )

P.S.: Apart from Sledge, there're some other Russian guys ;-)
