AGS forum journalists for flashing forum headlines?

Hey all.

I was thinking.
Actually, it came to me while surfing the forums.
How many of you would support this idea of mine, which i will explain now.

The idea is this.

Have you ever came to the forums after a few days of absence or even on your regular visit, and wondered: "Hmm, what threads are interesting to read. What thread should i check now.
But, there are so many of them, and i dont have time to read them all, and this topic sure doesnt explain the half of the contenent in this thread.
What if they have gone OT and are discussing something familiar and interesting to me, instead of the stuff that is written in the topic."

My solution to this would be that there is a number of AGS members who read the threads and then post a summary, or actually the peak (would that be the word) of the thread in a way that everybody can see it without bothering, above the forums, the way CJ notices us about stuff (delete unneeded PMs, forum change, etc.).
They would post it on a different page(something like the studio were it is all processed), and then put by CJ or some editor up on the ?promt box place?. Or even without the editor.
But there should be order.

So what are your oppinions.
Are you ready for change? Are you ready for simplifying with work?
:)

I agree with Pudding. Majority of the time, most of the threads here are pointless.

Maybe a weekly AGS review would suit more. At the end of the week (ie: Friday), we could post a review of what has happened on the forums and with AGS. Sort of like a mini newspaper, but for AGS current events. :/

Yes well, perhaps that will be the only way.

But the point is to extract the good ones from the bad ones when they arrive, and that doesnt mean daily, weekly, monthly, but randomly.

So, when there is something interesting, and what is interesting in the thing, it is posted in a few words on the ?billboard?.

The form shouldn't be hard to do.

Something like:
"In the "Name the thread" m0ds and eric are discussing should the americans stop calling the USA championship in baseball the World series"

That is pretty much the right size, so you get the point.

but then you run into the problem "HEY! Put my thread on that thing!" "HEY! Why didn't my thread get on that thing?!""HEY! Now THIS thread is sure to make it on that thing?! No?" "HEY! How about this one? Or this one...?"

And then I can see people trying to post "thought provoking" threads just to get on there. Everyone will ask about religion and abortion and all that...

If anything this isn't needed for gen gen, cause gen gen doesn't matter at all.

"NEWS ON THE MARCH! This week in AGS GenGen... Well... Some people talked about baseball... ur... Someone was accused of being DGMcPhee..."

And really, not a lot goes on that's really pressing matters. In fact nothing that happens here is so pressing that it has to be pointed out to everyone by a committee. If a thread is popular it stays at the top or is stickied allowing everyone to see it.

Personally I have no problem viewing every thread, I skim it and if it's interestingÃ,  I read it and if not, oh well. And if I'm gone for a week and come back, what I missed doesn't matter cause there will be new stuff to read. In my opinion what one should spend their time doing is not trying to spotlight forum posts for other people to read but instead try strengthening the community by playing games and offering honest criticism, then visit the games in production thread and offer honest criticism, then visit the tech forums and see if you can help people there.

In my opinion...
"This must be a good time to live in, since Eric bothers to stay here at all"-CJ also: ACHTUNG FRANZ!

Chicky

Perhaps not needed here in GenGen, but a nice overview of the 'popular threads' would be good.

Oh yeah! I remember when that happened!

Boy, wasn't that a wild ride! But it's a good thing we killed the fake DG in the end!

Yes... Definately killed the fake DG...

why not a modding system like slashdot has?

moderators can vote on every topic whether it's good or not (so-called modding up / down).
the votes are measured on a scale from -5 to 5 iirc.
then users can set a treshold to see only topics with a score of at least 1, meaning the threads shown have been modded up.

would be a hell to implement into this forum imho. maybe some of us could help by contributing php snippets.
additionally the db needs one more entry per topic, maybe in an arraylike format.

for example every mod gets a digit in a number like this: "09474",
4 is preset and means normal or not voted, values > 4 are showing a positive voting, values < 4 a negative.
so this number means:
mod1 voted -5
mod2 voted +5
mod3 either voted 0 or did not vote
mod4 voted +3
so the score of this entry would be ((-5 +5 +3) / 3) == 1.

not that easy to explain and it's late. i'm sorry.
but i would try to help with the php stuff. time for dusting off my books. (no, wait. they're ebooks, should be no dust on them..)

:)

oh well. forgot to add: this would include a major change for the forums since we would need a bunch of new 'moderators'. they don't need the rights to lock topics, only to vote on them. i would suggest at least 5 people for gengen. don't know about the other forums, i'm not that often in there ;)
... it's quite easy being the best.

That's a lot to ask of a moderator. Their already busy enough as it is without adding more to their workload.

If you didn't come to the forums for a week, then see what you missed. Our lives shouldn't be ruled by these forums anyway. The Gen. Chit Chat is, believe it or not, is not the sole purpose of AGS. Eons ago, it seem, AGS chat seemed to be predominant in where our conversations lay. And not that it is bad that we post here, it strengthens the community a bit, the problem lays in the fact that too many of us putz around in these forums and don't spend enough time making games (me included).

I'd also like to say, that a person should make their own oppinions. Read the first post in a thread, if it catches you, read on. Otherwise go somewhere else. I also find that if there has been a thread with tons of reply's already, as interesting as it might be, I'd rather not spend time catching up.

Also, you'll find that the forums tend to go in cycles of repetativeness, and you're likely to find a similar thread eventually anyway.

Well people, I am now actually changing views.

Tho' it seemed to me like a good idea at first, I think i forgot about the essential.
Game making that is. Mills has a point, and so does eric.
More quality games is what we really need.

If not, we're headed for the same destiny The Roman Empire had.

They started as farmers doing everything by themselves, but later as they grew stronger, they had more and more comfort, until they relied on their slaves to do all the work, and thus the corruption evolved bringing it to its doom. More or less like that.

I have gone astray, backwards and even other dimensions, but it doesnt seem I followed the Adventure maker's Path.

But still, nothing lasts forever, so i'm going to try to enjoy this time of AGSing and actually do something.

But ofcourse, if the idea was needed to materialise, i think DJ's idea is fairly good, but instead of m0ds, it should be voted by people.

Voting would result in people voting bad topics "5+!!1~"  instead of the good topics. Not to mention the amount of space and bandwidth it would take.

Czar

But only the content would be voted. And only in specified subforums, if needed.
But then again, if also needed, there could be content(sp) quality, and an Interesting scale.

Also, if it would take up a lot of bandwith, we can stay with type which I repeat, doesnt miss anything, and i was only hypothetical up here.

Maybe some sort of AGS e-zine that would come out every week, featuring sections corresponding to each of the forum sections. So in Competitions and Activities forum you could have the winners and if it was an art contest you could display their work of art. You could also have the "quote of the week", like something absurdly silly someone said, or a moment of insight, or some sort of "fortune cookie" saying.
