My brother, you speak to my own heart.  I feel your pain and share your lover.

Someday, there will be a direct sattelite uplink in every home, untill that day, I suggest you and I head out, kidnap a cable comapny exec. and hold him hostage untill we get our way.

I went for 5 years with a 56k modem that connect at 33k (on a good day...)

A couple of months back I got cable, and it's great.

You are missing out on a lot, and I anticipate you will die of boredom in about 6 minutes...

...they comfort me."

What's your point?

God obviously wasn't aware of the wonders of broadband. Had he been, the verse would've read more like:

Even though I walk through the valley of slow modems, I will fear no evil, for your isp is with me; your modem and your telephone line, they comfort me.

AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

But I thought God was omniscient?

Anyway, Grav, I feel your pain. For years (from 1997 when I first got the 'net up to last September) I had dial-up. The area my parents live in is just outside the cable and DSL boundary, so it's dial-up or nothing (although DSL is getting switched on there in June, yay!). I now have 1Mbps cable in my room at college, which is quite literally a dream come true.

Oh and C_Leks, a satellite uplink in every home wouldn't be that great. Although they are faster than dial-up they're not all that fast. They operate at roughly the same download speed as the slowest DSL does, and nowhere near as fast as the better DSL...

Haddas

I heard they can go really fast, but are not suitable foe MP games because of lag

Fuzzpilz

Yes, the latency is awful, and unlike some other problems with today's satellite Internet connections this one can't be fixed because the signal will still have to travel to the satellite and back no matter what you do.

By the way, I've noticed DSL generally seems to be cheaper than dialup for people who can get it. It is for me, for example.

I posted this before in another thread ...

I look back VERY fondly on the days of modem usage.  I remember back in '96 playing Quake over the internet with my brother (who was in Florida and I was in Michigan).  We both had 28.8 modems (which some of you youngsters probably don't even know about!)

We used to meet up on empty servers and just 'chat' over Quake.  Then he'd proceed to thrash me ...

Then along came the glamorous 33.6 modems ... my brother had enough money to upgrade, I did not.  So then he REALLY thrashed me over Quake.

So when 56k came out it was the best thing ever!!  I finally upgraded (never had a 33.6) and it was a whole new world!  I could actually download at, are you ready for this?, 4k-6k a second!!  Talk about lightning fast!!!

Now I must admit, I have had cable and/or DSL for the last 4 years or so.  And if I had to go back to using a 56k I would probably hate it ... but at this point it's nothing but fond memories.

Ahhh ... nostalgia ...

I had my own BBS back in the days of 2400 and 14.4k baud modems.  Now THAT was cool!  Playing Trade Wars 2002 and Legend of the Red Dragon.

Ahhh ... even further back!  I remember those days too.

We used to have Prodigy online with a 2400 baud modem ... I used to check the weather everyday after school.

Consider yourself lucky. My 56k connects at 26.4 and rarely 28.8 all the time. The fastest download speed I can get is 2-3kbps. If I only lived 1000ft across the bridge I could get cable...I think. The cable company is really bad at returning phone calls.

I got my 56k two years go. Before then I was using a 33.6 for several years

And before then (in high school), I was using modems like 28.8s and 14.4s to dial on to bulletin boards.

For me, 56k is still good enough for me at the moment.

Heh, just last week we got broadband. It is very cool, I can finally download stuff 5x. Yeah its only 256/64, but its better than 56k.

Hehe, shame. I feel for you guys, really! I got FREE internet, that's right FREE internet! Although I got 64 kb thing we're permantly connected so I got none of this dial-up crap, hehe.

Shame for you guys.
