Would you like a remake of Maniac Mansion?

I'd say, go for it - even make a multiplayer version using AVO's plugin!

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Well, THERE's a thought... if there ever was a game that could use it, Maniac Mansion is it...

Although I've heard from some people that the TCP-IP plugin isn't that good yet, I mean for practical use. I wouldn't know, I haven't tried it, that's what I heard.

I'd say yes, go for it, and do whatever you like.
you are (and problably all of us in this forum) an AMATEUR game maker, so you dont make games for a living = you dont make games for others to enjoy (understand me in that) = you make games mainly for YOU, to have fun. If later people enjoy your game, then excellent! but if they dont, even if it ruins a classic, who cares? as long as you had a great time while ruining it, its ok, imo ;).
The worst thing that could happen is people not liking your game, so they wont play it, so problem solved.
You had a good time, they didnt. Next time you can make a game, in which you had a great time making it, and people playing it. Thats even better : )
Just my opinion on those 'Dont make a game about XXX' comments.

Apparently MM was originally planned as multiplayer, but they couldn't work out the technology to get it to work right...

modgeulator

I think you should remake it as a Quake deathmatch mod  :P

Migs

I think we should remake it and connect it to battle.net for some FIERCE MULTIPLAYER COMPETITION!

I wish people would stop suggesting remakes and just make more original games.

im only 15 so these older games are fairly new to me. Is maniac mansion that game you could play in DOTT on that guy's computer? because that was almost more fun than DOTT itself.

Man haven't played DOTT in years

Dude being 15 is not an excuse. Im also 15 and i once had a commodore 64, play MM, Dott and all the other great games.
But the best game would have to be snoopy side scroller on C64 ;D

well how old is MM? The first place i heard of it is on DOTT.

and how old were u when you had this c64. My dad had one when i was heaps young like 3 or something.

my first LA adventure was probably DOTT or Sam & Max hit the road man that was a funny game. When your a kid the references to Indiana jones just seem more funny

EDIT- what TXT-style writing?

Well I had just run MM once or twice and was never able to proceed much in the game, there're lots more adventure games that I had never played...

A great way to feel old is by realising you've played a lot of these games before some of the community members were even born.

Why must everything be updated these days?
Let it stay as it is, since it will probably be shut down, and start on something original instead.
Veteran, writer... with loads of unreleased games. Work in progress.

I thought I was probably one of the youngest here but I've just been made to feel like an old woman. I played all these old original sierra/lucasfilm games so long ago I can't remember what age I must have been ... and I'm only 20!

Ah, Leisure Suit Larry taught me so many dirty things when I was barely old enough to multiply (...speaking strictly in a mathmatical sense. What did you think I meant? Dirty minds...)

Kairus

I've been thinking myself about creating a remake of Maniac Mansion in a DOTT style for a long time, but it's not that easy.

First of all, don't mess with copyrights. Stealing DOTT graphics to use, for instance, Bernard or Dr. Fred would just be illegal. Furthermore, it would be a great opportunity to redraw Bernard younger (remember DOTT happened many years later than MM1).

Secondly, in Maniac Mansion there are some really huge backgrounds that I think just couldn't be made in a DOTT style, as you probably can't add a perspective different from what it has without changing many things. You just can't do it without making the game work differently, not the same feeling.

Lastly, one of the reasons I wouldn't do it is that I am already making a game that uses some copyrighted characters and some things don't feel fine. Not knowing whether your project will ever see the light or it'll be closed nearly completion due to some annoying sue is not a nice feeling. I have seen that some adventure developers (in these forums) have done it without much trouble, but Spyros, for instance, was kindly asked to remove Hugo's House of horrors remake.

If you still want to do it, I think it really would look nice and could probably bring back to life this classic game, as I know some people who don't play it because "it's so old, the graphics look so bad, etc". I don't personally agree with them, I think the graphics are awesome, specially if you consider the time it was done, the PCs in that time, etc. I don't think the puzzles should be changed, they're just perfect the way they are with the different ways, so you should find a good MM script so you can imitate the puzzles as accurately as possible. I don't know how many paths there are in the game, I couldn't ever beat the game without using Bernard, for example, I've seen three endings but I think there are more.

If you plan to take this seriously... go ahead. :)

Totally off topic. Sorry!

Kinoko, you're probably the oldest person we've had to think they were the youngest.  We've even had some thirteen year olds.

Back on topic- I'd have to agree with DG about making more original games. There's a thread over at AGI, and they figured that the only non VGA Sierra games that haven't/aren't being remade are the Manhunter games.  Not to mention all the unofficial sequels.  Go make something new!

No! Why make a remake, when the original is all good???

This is a question that's keep revolving in my head since I've heard that the American Television is about to air... a REMAKE OF VON TRIER'S "KINGDOM"!!!
The original is only 5 years old, so I don't know what Stephen King wants to "improve"... of course, the Danish Genius didn't use CG, so maybe American TV Moguls want to add some lens flare...
And they keep saying that it is "inspired by von Trier's series" whereas ALL CHARACTERS are taken directly from the original, along with huge amount of plot (even little crosses with names of the patients... KING, oh, you're so fucking original, Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital, indeed!)

Sorry -- as you can see, my views on remakes are highly biased at the moment.

EDIT: Oh, and the remake is going to be directed by a man who made one episode of "A-team". One more reason for me to stay helluva far from websites about American media. Brilliant. A man who filmed Mr. T's stunts is going to compete with a genius who renewed modern cinema. Congratulations.

GarageGothic

Totally off topic, but hey, Goldmund started it :)
Well, there is one reason for remaking The Kingdom: To give it a real ending. I'm not saying that Stephen King is the right guy to do it - Hell, his previous series, Rose Madder, made Phantasmagoria look like a Kubrick film - but it does deserve a proper finale. There's no chance that it'll happen in Denmark. Two of the main actors from the original series,  Ernst Hugo JäregÃ¥rd (Dr. Helmer) and Kirsten Rolfes (Mrs. Drusse), are dead, and there's been little interest from Danish television to finance a third season. I don't know how much King will follow the original plot, but at least his adaptation will have a conclusion.

Goldmund

But, Garage Gothic...
Do you really think that what matters in Trier's series is the plot? I mean, is it really important what is the end of the story??
I'm really surprised with your reply.
The cast, the atmosphere, the jokes, the music - this is what matters here, not a story! It was evident that Lars didn't know how it is going to end, much like Lynch with his "Twin Peaks".
It's not a fable with a moral!
