Really loving the game but I can't find oil or something to mix with the coal dust to dye Rogers hair

I found exactly that problem, can you remember what you did? I sent a PM to ddavey but never got a reply. There is definately a bug in here.

Same issue here
I got stuck at 90%, no way to complete the game
I went back to an earlier save game and
finally beat it
At some point in the game I never got the option to ask about the oil, although I was sure that I had to do something with Roger's red hair ( as written in the Sea Lore book )
Probably because I solved another puzzle
before this one
Definitely a bug ....
However, a very nice game !

Something in your inventory might train a cat? There is a banana aboard that you might want to replace? Might the sack be used to startle someone? The whistle needs a pea, or something pea-like.

Regarding the 90% bug:

Replayed the game, to see if it's possible to complete doing the hair gel bit last. Worked for me. Need to look at Roger to get the dialogue option for the hair gel. Then, it becomes a search for who has the gel, and how to color it black.

My only negative observations are a spelling error involving than instead of thanks, and the position of Jacob's views between normal and startled dialogue.

About the 90% bug:
I also replayed the game at 90%,
I do get the message that Roger is blowing the hair out of his face,
but there is no dialog option.
I don't know when this option gets lost, can send save game if you want.

I'm not part of the development team, but I got curious about this. I have not been able to recreate the issue, but it looks like it might be the thing that stalled WHAM out in his YouTube playthrough. Has me wondering if something in the dialogue tree is turning off that particular bit of dialogue? Or something related to the score turning it off? In WHAM's video, it looks like it was there, but it disappeared after asking about the tattoos? Not sure I haven't gone cross-eyed looking into this, however. Probably not very helpful.

In WHAM's YouTube video, at about 40:20 in, and at 70% wind, the option to ask where Roger left the gel isn't showing up.

I'm still of the opinion something is shutting off the wrong dialogue option. Might help if the subject line on this thread was correct. Might get some of the game's designers looking into the issue. And, I'm still not able to duplicate the strangeness.

I made it to 90%. and no other characters speak about the gel. It's a real shame this little bug preventing me for getting to the end. It's a very enjoyable experience as with all games from GOC.

Spent a lot of time yesterday trying to reproduce the issue. My game never acted up, so I'm unable to help. Did observe several of the solutions to the various puzzles can be done without knowing exactly why you are doing them.

From my recollection:

You can birth the albatross without encountering Silas' Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner book. Helps Silas out at his next AA meeting.   You can rename the ship without possessing the Sea Lore book. You can also PG the figurehead without the Sea Lore book, but Silas gives you a hint, earlier. May be more, and some of what I've mentioned could be wrong. Game getting fuzzy after several attempts. Game started acting wonky after doing a couple of this type of stuff, but I've still never duplicated the hair gel issue.

I think it's a bit more complex than just that. In WHAM's YouTube, it took him a while to "look" at Roger. That shows up the initial dialogue option about the hair gel.



The next dialogue option doesn't show the where Roger last saw it option.



It brought an end to the game for WHAM, since WHAM couldn't even start that quest. I realize that just looking at Roger is part of the issue, but I think something else may be wrong, here. Once again, I have not had the problem despite my many attempts at trying to bust it.

Just noticed that, in WHAM's video, he does not yet have the tattoo book. I'll have to see if that's the issue? Back in a while, if I can find the time to check it out.

I replayed game and each options inside spoiler I restarted game, with or without getting or reading (hint book) is not an issue, bug only happend inside soving first option:

1) Solving Rum thing and without solving tattoo and speaking with roger, extra oil dialog does not show = bug
2) Solving tattoo and as well blowing whistle (near roger or on deck), without solving Rum thing and speaking with roger and extra oil dialog show up, no bug here at this point

Done same as seen above 2nd option, extra oil up is when we ask roger where it is. But if we don't don't ask right away, initial hair dialog is lost (bug) when solving rum puzzle beforehand. I suspect the bug happens when solving rum thing

To answer your concern of WHAM getting tattoo book or not, isn't an issue as we can solve tattoo thing even without getting that book, obviously it's wrong. I think following future implementation is best
