Title: Yo-yo
Post by: Ubel on Mon 13/10/2008 18:05:21
It's been a while since I broke my last yoyo and am thinking of getting a new, better one. Is there a yoyo expert around here? I'm wondering if there's a good brand I should look into or something...

I was looking at this one and it looks quite promising, but probably a bit too big: http://yoyowiki.org/wiki/Henrys_Viper

If anyone has any valid suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. Keeping in mind that I'm not really willing to put more than around 40 euros on it. I would like a quality one though, since I like yoyoing very much.

I thought they stopped making yo-yos when the 90s ended  ???

that yo yo looks like it could kill a man.  I liked my duncan , it was cheap durable and hours of fun.  and what the heck does
"The yo-yo comes stock with no response system " does that mean it comes with no string? they make the whole business sound so technical I feel like an idiot... I just like to played with mine.

Thinking about it I want a yo-yo too. They're really cool and you can accidentally hit people in the face with them which is something that every toy should have the capacity to do.

I participated in the Coca Cola-sponsored Irish schools yo-yo promotional contests back in '82. The grand prize was the chrome-effect Coca-Cola Galaxy yo-yo, the envy of small impressionable children everywhere.

I won dozens of cans of Coca-Cola, and a Coca-Cola branded yo-yo and matching cap.

I did not win the Coca-Cola Galaxy.

The first of many failures.

There's much surreptitious advertising in your post.

Well, I decided against buying that Viper thing because of its size. Instead, I ordered one of these: http://www.yoyostore.com/yomhypwin.html

Why that particular yo-yo? It was cheap and got good reviews... I browsed through hundreds of different yo-yos all over the internet and somehow finally this one stood out. Once I get my hands on it, I shall report whether it was a successful bargain or not.

That is why I love 'em so much.

Which is ironic, because I'm much more of a Pepsi man. But they didn't have a yo-yo sponsorship deal.

I don't really like butterfly yoyos to be honest.  I prefer the Duncan tournament designs with the smooth rounded shape.  The proyos aren't bad, either.

Ooh, yo-yos...
Back in - what? - 1996? There was hardcore yoyo craze, those coca-cola yoyos everywhere, school was full of them.
I hated them, but then again, you had to have one.
I still have mine under loads of dust somewhere... I never learned any decent tricks though, wasn't my thing.

Hm, maybe I'll look for it now--

Wait, 40 EUR for a yoyo? Crazy.
I would never pay so much for such a boring toy. Okay, you spin it for a day or two, similar rubik's cube fun or something, but then it goes back to drawer. And stays there.

Haha, not in my case. I love yoyoing, it's such a relaxing thing to do. Comparable to sitting on a big rock by a lake in the summer evening while watching the reflection of the sunset playing on the calm waves.

And learning tricks is fun! \o/

Yeah, I'm still a child and I miss the 90's!

1990's?! Man, you people really missed the heyday of the Yo-yo... :)

Watch! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApbMUk0Muuc) At 0:18 you'll get an eyeful of crap merchandise, similar to the guff I won.

And at 0:26, mine is the one in the middle.

That yoyo will be worth some money one day.

Good point, but any Yo-yo's I owned are long gone. :'(

I never knew Coca Cola (http://shop.ebay.com/items/?_nkw=coca+cola+yo+yo&_sacat=0&_fromfsb=&_trksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=coca+cola+yo+yo&_osacat=0) had such a long relationship with the Yo-yo.

Behold! The GALAXY (http://cgi.ebay.com/COCA-COLA-YO-YO-GOLD-GALAXY-1980S-RARE-COKE-YOYO_W0QQitemZ200261475070QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200261475070), in all it's horrible sparkly glory!

...so, isn't this a cheaper alternative?  ;D

I never loved yoyoing and found it kind of boring, too. But I guess everyone has his/her own idle activity that is close to doing nothing. From people chewing toothpicks and yoyo-people to origami. The only activity that I return to regularily is lockpicking. It fulfills the conditions - you can do it over and over, it's monotonic and takes a lot of time  ;D

You should buy that and bring it to mittens, Fish.  Then you can show off your skills.
