I know someone here knows, how do I network two laptops? Seems real easy, but:

Laptop 1: Stuff needs to be moved from here (all my AGS files for ex.)
Windows 98
CardBus Ethranet card

Laptop 2: Stuff needs to be moved to here
Windwos XP Home edition
Integrated Ethranet connector

I have a crossconnected RJ45 (whatever the type is...) network cable, which I tried, but with no succes at all.

Someone know how to do this, or know to point me a site to help me?

I'm getting desperate(sp?)... I can't work on anything AGS related before I get the stuff moved... (nearly 3GB stuff to move, so floppy's are out of question)
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

You can't connect two PCs directly with a network cable.Ã,  They need to go through a hub or a switch, otherwise it's not a network.Ã,  You can connect two PCs with a serial cable, I believe.Ã,  Failing that, do you have a CD burner on your 98 machine?Ã,  Or (unlikely) an external burner?

EDIT: Oh wait, you say you have a crossover cable?  That should work, I think... Not sure what the problem is, unless your PCs aren't set up with Windows Networking or something.  Man, I'm totally not the right person to be answering these questions.  I hope someone more helpful comes along...

Also make sure your Firewall isn't blocking the network connection (if you have a firewall)

This screwed me up for a while.

especially with ZA on both machines

have you set up IP addresses or is it set to obtain automatically. sometimes it might be worth trying to initially set up the network with specific ip addresses eg. 192.168.0.1 & the other pc 192.168.0.2

both subnet masks 255.255.255.0

I can share internet, but I've somehow screwed something up so I can't share any files between my 2 machines anymore, it all started when I reinstalled XP the first time (and never got it to work each other time) I think that's the problem, you can't call your machine the same name the next time you reinstall xp, it adds a number next to it.

eg.
it started as Tim
Then I called it Tim again and it was Tim1
Now it's Tim2

I can view folders either way but can't copy them either way, my C: drive share name is C$ and I can't change it.

I just have a couple of spare hard drives I can connect through a firewire thesedays for backup purposes.

(this is XP pro on one and Win98se on the other) (2 people can use the internet at the same time, that's all it's good for at the moment)

Should be easy enough to do with the right cable(s) plugged into the right ports. Even back since Windows 98 (perhaps earlier Windows versions too?), there has been a Direct Cable Connection feature. Here's a little Q and A I found from a tech board that might help:

Quote
Q: After purchasing a new PC, I'm trying to find a way to transfer data files from my old computer to the new one without having to use floppy disks. That would take a long time, plus, some of my files are too large to put on a floppy. Someone mentioned a cable that you can hook up to both machines.

A: Someone is absolutely right. The Direct Cable Connection feature in Windows 98 lets you link two PCs together using either a parallel cable, which attaches to the printer ports of both PCs, or a serial cable that connects to the serial ports. Direct Cable Connection should be located in the Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications menu. (If it's not there, you can install it using Windows Setup in the Add/Remove Programs option of the Windows Control Panel.)

When you start Direct Cable Connection, you'll see a Wizard that will walk you through the process of getting your old and new PCs to talk to each other and setting them up to share files. Keep in mind, however, that while you can easily copy data files like Word documents from one PC to the other, copying an actual program is a tricky business and probably won't work. For that, you need to install the program on the new PC.

And I think you could also get a HUB to connection with the Ethernet cards and then run the Network Setup wizard in XP. It's been a while since I linked up things like this (I should know), so my memory is a bit rusty on specifics of how to do it. If you still need help though, perhaps I can find some step-by-step guide somewhere to walk you through it.

Another option (though a more expensive way, but also a good way to backup data/files) is to invest an an external USB Hard-Drive. You simply plug it into the old laptop you want to copy the files from, copy the file to the USB Hard Drive. Then plug the USB Hard Drive into your new computer, and then copy the files over from the USB drive over to to the hard-drive of your new computer. It's a bit of a round-about-way, but it does give you an extra and somewhat easy (and portable) means of backing up and sharing data/files between different computers.

The thing is, the USB connector on the older computer is busted. I'll try Tim's suggestion first, the IP thing, as they are now retrieved automatically. I tried paraller cable, but with no succes. Thanks so far, I be reporting back.

See last edit, this thing is out of date now...

Ok, tried it, but no succes. I can see under the "Whole Network", on the XP machine, the Microsoft Networking thingy, and on the 98 machine directly under the Whole Network, a group called MSHOME (I defined it on both myself), and under this group I can see the pc I am viewing with, but not the other. If I disconnect the nework cable, I cannot browse the Network on the 98 machine at all. Is there something crucial I missed? I set the IP's on the TCP/IP setting screen on both machines, actually on "TCP/IP -> Cardbus Ethranet Adapter" on the 98, and "TCP/IP" from the LAN icon's protopies in XP network connections screen.

The XP machine has F-Secure Internet security on it, which has a firewall built in. I don't know if it bloocks the connection, I'll have one more try now, diableing the firewall and virus protection.

----- EDIT -----

Whee, I told the firewall that my Ethranet adapter is trustworthy, and it allowed the older laptop to acces the shared files of the newer one. I disalbe F-Secure on the older laptop, but I cannot see it anywhere on the newer one. So, working, but in the wrong way! Ideas?

----- EDIT2 -----

;D

Hee, it showed up after all :) But, it only shows me a shareddocs folder, which is empty. I had ticked on the older machine the option to share files and folders in Microsoft network, but I don't know how to view them. Or does this sharing Files and Folders mean only the shareddocs folder?

----- EDIT3 -----

Erhm... Forget about it. I sorted it out. Tim, one possible cause to your problem too: I had forgotten to set the hdd partitions to be shared, with full rights ::)

Thanks everyone, I appriciate your effort. ;)
