Not too long ago I received a Palm Pre Plus from Verizon. This is my favorite phone. I never experienced anything like this before. If you want more details on the Palm Pre Plus, got precentral.net .

But I love my phone so much, that I wanted to post a review of it here. Hope noone minds...

I have to say that I have used/owned several smartphones before including the Old PalmOS, Windows Mobile 2002/2003/5/6/6.1/6.5, Android, iPhone and Blackberry. And the palm pre is by far the most professional, funnest, most useful, most in-sync phone I have ever used!!!!!!!!!

Palm has really done it. Their WebOS is amazing. I never ever experienced Multi-tasking as perfect as it is on this phone. Its really easy to use, even for beginners, and really fast and the idea behind it is just really simple. There is absolutely no flaw behind this system.

The card system itself which allows the multi-tasking is really a cool feature. Atleast now I can pause my work wherever I am so that I can continue doing whatever else needs to be done. This innovation to me is comparable to when "Live DVR" was invented. Its truly that innovative.

As far as apps go, there are nearly 3000 native apps available for it and more coming fast! Its not as many as the iPhone catalog, but you know what, atleast it doesn't have 345 different apps that do the same thing (EG: The lightsaber app on the iPhone. There are so many, but they all do the same stinking thing). Not to mention you can buy motionApps Classic and run all the old PalmOS Software, making the library really compete with the iPhone. And even though there arent as many "new" apps as the iPhone, there are tons of patches, updates and software and games that do EVERYTHING you need good enough. In fact, fewer apps even save you money in the long run.

The Live syncing is amazing. All you do is put in your email address and/or facebook login and it does it all for you... It syncs all your calendars automatically. It syncs all your contacts automatically. And it syncs your inbox automatically. I have never experienced anything as effortless as this. It literally put all my information there for me. Putting this with the multi-tasking system makes doing business and mixing in pleasure a snap. The closest phone that matches this, I will say, is the iPhone. But the Pre is far superior in this aspect than the iPhone.

The Launcher is cool too. You have the launch bar which can be dragged from top to bottom. Then the launcher itself which pretty much mimics the iPhones main launcher screen with several enhanced features which make it better.

I like the music player and the support for ITunes, which most players do not have. So this is one of the few smartphone systems that can sync with ITunes on your pc and play your music. The original player was great. But I downloaded the free remix edition and it turned my Pre into the ultimate mp3 player ever!

As far as hardware goes... I know many knock it. But, really, for a handheld, how much power do you need? 600mhz is not enough? You can even overclock it to 800mhz. It doesn't matter. The games play the same as they do on the iPhone (Trust me, I have played them on both), the smoothness of the interface is perfect. Really, what more do you want? Why pay more for better hardware that is really not needed on a handheld device? You want gaming power, buy a PSP or a DS. And still, it can probably play games just as well and poweful regardless.

The Keyboard looks awkward at first, but is really nice and comfortable to use. And its a nice feature to have with a phone for messaging and e-mail and other things..

It has 16gb of on device memory. What no 32GB???? Really, do you need that much anyway other than for music? I have about 25 hours of music on it. It only took up a little over a gig. For the rest of my music fixes, I use Pandora and radiotime- which more than cover up for the lack of an FM Player. In fact RadioTime plays over 50,000 stations in the US for free. I had every station I listen to on their. And as far as needing extra storage, the Pre is the first to offer Cloud Storage, meaning you can use ZumoDrive online to act as additional storage for the pre making it work as if it is actually part of the PRE. Its Awesome! I can virtually have unlimited space on the go with this thing. Not to mention that it also has a feature that backs up your whole phone onto Palm every day without ever interfering with your work. Why is this good? Because if you have to replace your phone, all you do on your next phone is login with your palm account and it restores ALL information and APPS so you dont lose a thing.

The G-Sensor/Accelerometer works great. I used it with Need for Speed undercover and its perfect.

The Camera works well and takes nice pictures.

The screen quality... To me in actual display, graphics capabilities and color/brightness... ITS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. It has a 24bit graphics processor. Really, you cant go wrong with that. As far as touch sensitivity... OK. The iPhone is the best hands down. But, its good enough and is about 90% as good as the iPhone. Believe me, you would barely even notice the difference. And if you never had an iPhone before, you wouldn't know the difference. PERIOD.

The design is really slick. I love it. Its not heavy. Its not bulky. The screen size is great. It could be a bit bigger, but its big enough. I never accidentally dial numbers with this thing. Its a pure genius design.

People also complain about its sturdiness... I think its pretty sturdy. Otherwise buy an attractive case on ebay for $5 and thats it. But its definetly better than the Nexus one which will crack if you keep it in your pocket. Whats up with that?

Other nice features of the pre:
*Documents to go to view Excel, Word and PDF files.
*Supports Facebook, Google, Exchange, IMAP and POP as well as AIM and other things.
*For Developers it supports HTML5/CSS/Javascript or c/C++ with SDL and basically allows you to recompile any library thats available for linux so that you can port apps over easily. And you can actually use all these languages together!
*Instant over the air updates of your apps
*Great sound quality for phone calls.
*3G phone. What would you really need 4G for? It streams music and video in HD really well already.
*Palm really cares for its customers more than other companies. That puts this over the edge for that reason alone!

The only downside to this is that battery. It consumes a lot of battery power. But just buy an extended battery, and it will last longer than any other phones battery, gaurantee'd!

Try the Pre, you will not regret it. In fact you wont even go to another phone after this!!!!

1. Hated it
2. Sucked, sucks and will probably continue to suck, unfortunately
3. Used to suck, got better, got even better, is now amazing (and extremely customizable)
4. I can hardly flaw it, although I think it's not a good value it is a good device
5. Can barely be considered a smartphone. Web Browser is almost worst than IE Mobile, doesn't have Skyfire support yet, extremely crash heavy, slow, poor memory management... the only thing Blackberries do well are emails...

QuoteAnd the palm pre is by far the most professional, funnest, most useful, most in-sync phone I have ever used!!!!!!!!!
I would say "Most Accessible." Beyond any other smartphone I think it is able to walk the line of offering complex features in a very simple and intuitive way. Now the iPhone and not even Android are competing in the same "usability" zone that WebOS is operating in, IMO.

QuotePalm has really done it. Their WebOS is amazing. I never ever experienced Multi-tasking as perfect as it is on this phone. Most Blackberries and Android devices are capable of this and many Windows Mobile phones are as well, the major difference is the visual and simplified way that Palm does it. People don't neccesarily understand "programs running in the background" or "multitasking." Those words, for whatever reason, are non tangible to +70% of the people I meet. The card system is INGENIOUS in that it defintively illustrates that you are leaving behind the program and NOT quitting it. Many Android application have begun to do something similar with leaving icons or status bars in the "Notification Tray" but again, Web OS is on another level here.

QuoteAs far as apps go, there are nearly 3000 native apps available for it and more coming fast! iPhone, WM, Android, Blackberry, WebOS: That's the current breakdown of marketplace in terms of size. Blackberry is quickly becoming a joke and VERY soon WebOS (should) will over take it. WebOS being tied to Palm devices it's difficult to imagine that it will overtake Android which is experience very high levels of growth. For the immediate future Windows Mobile is only ranked second because it's existed the longest and most legacy apps run on the newest OS. In terms of number of apps in time frame available the ball game is really only being played out between the iPhone and Android right now. the App Store being the largest and still growing (although there is a very high level of redundancy for MOST apps and their approval process is a joke.) Android being multi-device/multi-manufacturer is probably going to see the most non-linear growth. You'll see multiple marketplaces popping up (there are already 3 alternatives that I know of) and contributing to the Android ecosystem. Palm has spent alot of time developing native apps and having a 3rd party port in legacy apps, however there just isn't enough buzz in the developer market-space. Android and the iPhone are more attractive options as a developer (even developing for Symbian is a smarter move if  you're looking for mass appeal,) and so WebOS is viewed as a niche market. Which typically means that the quality of apps is generally higher! When something is released it usually isn't half assed, which is a good thing.  Will the Palm do what MOST people need it to do? Yes. Will it do want many people want it to do? To a large extent yes but the fact of the matter is that it is more limited than some of the other options out there which has a viral effect. Palm doesn't have the "Hot newness" and so people get the phones that have it and that makes developers develop for those devices. Call it momentum, call it self-fulling prophecy, whatever.

Palm has done something that might be appealing for some developers scorned by the App Store or the Android Market (and don't want to release their software on Cydia or Mobentoo) Palm has a development process where developers can release apps without getting Palms approval! They're not listed in the general Marketplace (it's listed under "Homebrew" with disclaimers) but I think this freedom is a big step in attracting new developers, which can help grow overall.

Android does this with Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail/Facebook and Blackberry does it with all the before mentioned and Outlook. Android doesn't support Outlook syncing out of the box but there are numerous 3rd party programs (some free some pay) that make the process pretty painless. In my experience with the Pre its ability to pull information isn't above and beyond what I've experienced, just different. I never had the issue myself but I do know some people that don't want all their contacts in their phone and when they deleted them from their Pre, it reverse synced and deleted them (which doesn't make sense to me, but I believe them.) So far I've been following you closely but now I think I've dropped behind. I think every smartphone platform with the exception of Windows Mobile is on-par with the Pre and some offer (not necessarily more but) different features. My best friend uses Facebook for everything: Appointments, Contacts numbers and emails, messaging, blogging, photologging, etc. His Blackberry Bold 9700 is more in-sync/integrated with Facebook than any iPhone/Android/WM/WebOS (Pixi/Pre) could be. I use Google for everything: Google Docs, GMail, Blogger, GSites, Google Voice, Google Talk, etc. and Android is capable of Syncing my stuff beyond what any other platform could do. I do think Palm has a very powerful and easy to use syncing process but I think feature wise it's not superior to it's competitors (most of them) it's just different.

Simplicity and intuitiveness has never been more apparent in a mobile OS, before EVER.
Hands down, simply the nicest and most fluid GUI on the market- period.

QuoteAs far as hardware goes... I know many knock it. But, really, for a handheld, how much power do you need? 600mhz is not enough? You can even overclock it to 800mhz. It doesn't matter. When I had the Pre I did notice multitasking was an issue. If you ran 1-3 apps at a time everything was good, anything beyond that and each additional app contributed apalpable sludge in its processing. Granted I've only used the "Pre+" for about a week, so most of my experience is based on the "Pre" which is 95% the same phone. I didn't notice any MAJOR increase in multi-tasking thanks to the extra RAM (I did notice a huge boost in web browsing and loading up feature length movies, however.) Ultimately I think the processor is a good speed and the phone is capable of "out-multitasking" pretty much everyone else, but it also comes at a price.

Not the Nexus One, not the Droid, not iPhone, not the Blackberry Storm appear to die faster than the Pre... It might just be perception (I've never actually timed it) but I always had a charger on hand when I had the Palm. I think walking the line between power and fuel consumption is a tricky one and this is maybe the one thing that needs to be addressed most immediately.

QuoteThe Keyboard looks awkward at first, but is really nice and comfortable to use. And its a nice feature to have with a phone for messaging and e-mail and other things..
I have the hands of a three year old and the eyes of 90 year old. The keyboard is too cramped for me (although, I was told it's designed to be used "one handed...") is too "jelly" (as opposed to "clicky") and is difficult to read in all but shade and darkness. I never thought I would like typing on a screen (hated it on the iPhone and the BB Storm, but I find myself using it on phones that have a keyboard just for the convenience!) but it would be nice to have a decent option. I think the keyboard is kind of a joke. The one's that palm used one their Treo line were decent! Then they switched to this weird Gel-Key thing and have been using it ever since... why? It blows compared to the old stuff! If you're going to have a keyboard it had better be EXTREMELY FUNCTIONAL, like EXTREMELY and it really just isn't.

QuoteIt has 16gb of on device memory. What no 32GB???? Really, do you need that much anyway other than for music? I have about 25 hours of music on it. It only took up a little over a gig. Because if you have to replace your phone, all you do on your next phone is login with your palm account and it restores ALL information and APPS so you dont lose a thing.

16GB is plenty but try using that memory for anything other than your Pre... you can't. The Pre WILL BE obsolete at some point and that stuff is going to need to be "transferred" in a "process." I can take the memory card out of my phone and have literally 97% of my content available on a Blackberry, a Symbian device, a Moblin device, an Android device, a Windows Mobile device. Try doing an insurance claim on your Pre and having to use a loaner phone for a week and half without JACK SHIT- it sucks.  Cloud storage? We're talking about a mobile phone, not a computer with a fast process and a connection that devours megabytes. The fastest speeds on a wireless network are on Sprint "4G" network, which exists in only one city... it's about 10MB/s. Next is T-Mobile with 7MB/s up and running in about a dozen cities across the US. Verizon and AT&T are lucky to hit speeds of 2MB/s ANYWHERE, your observed speed will likely be lower than that, on average. Cloud storage isn't an elegant solution for mobile devices. Try being at an airport terminal, under ground, surrounded by 6in cement, waiting for a plan that's an hour an a half late already, with no arrival in sight. Lets just pop open that document I "saved on the cloud" oh god... the world doesn't exist in this bunker...

removing the semi-pointless keyboard and implementing a touch keyboard that's designed as well as the rest of their GUI would have saved enough space that they could cram an SD slot in there. It's a simple, standard, universal solution and it's bad enough that the iPhones arrogant ass thinks that IT can get away with it... really Palm? Really?

I love the capacious on-board storage and the ABILITY to have more in the cloud, but a lack of external memory is really just retarded and I don't understand it. Sorry for ranting.

1. Agreed
2. Meh- they're passable and beyond "disposable camera" quality. But they're not making me leave my digital at home like a N97/95/85/Droid/Nexus
3. Hmm- visually speaking it's pretty. It doesn't blow me away (this may be due to the fact that phone's have been my life since I was 17 and have had way too much time with them, and seen way too many of them) but there are far better displays out there. (Although maybe not as cheap.)

QuoteThe design is really slick. I love it. Its not heavy. Its not bulky. The screen size is great. It could be a bit bigger, but its big enough. I never accidentally dial numbers with this thing. I like the design, I think they could have pumped up the screen size a bit but overall it's decent. Just like a limited number of people complain about the sturdiness of the Pre a limited number (I think like 3-5) have had their Nexus Ones crack in their pockets and in every case I've seen it's been young people with tight-ass pants. Personally my genitalia just can't rock those types of pants- not an issue for me. This isn't limited to the nexus one, however. Tight Pants + LCDs have been at war for almost a century now, it's almost like Pedobears vs the Carebears, but with more bleeding cracks and extinguished lights... The slide has a bit of wobble but it's nothing, that's how rails function, the mechanism is quick and solid. The device feels planted and not cheap like some "wanna-be smartphones" I'M LOOKING AT YOU BLACKBERRY PEARL/CURVE/MOTOROLA CLIQ/SAMSUNG BEHOLD/TOUCH PRO CRUISE/PULSE/GAMEBOY POCKET... I would actually argue that it feels more solid than the Pixi... which I kind-of hate the feel of.

Overall I think the Pre is one of the best phones in the Smartphone Marketplace, currently. It can perform with and in some cases out perform all its competition and if bought on a contract is probably the single best deal available (as we speak.) Ultimately though, the important thing when buying a device like a smartphone is considering exactly how you will use it (which most people fail to do, buy a smartphone and THEN figure out how they want to use it- and are then stuck with a phone that doesn't meet their needs... fags.) The Pre isn't "the best" because that's subjective to each individuals needs but it is a FANTASTIC phone and worth more than simple consideration if you are in the market for a new handset. Keep in mind that in the U.S. it is available on SPrint and Verizon with a contract, although I would buy an unlocked GSM Palm Pre and TRAVEL THE WORLD!!!!!

I give it a B+/A- or an 8.7/10 Stars

From Wikipedia:
QuoteThe Palm Pre has been known to suffer from some quality issues. The slider mechanism sometimes becomes sensitive, loose and wiggly, causing a problem that has become known as the "Oreo Twist" by users. [25]  Palm aimed to address the issue with the Pre Plus, making the slider mechanism stronger. The screen has been known to be overly sensitive, sometimes cracking from being in a pocket, and the headphone jack sometimes ceases working. [26]  A problem seen with the introduction of the Palm Pre Plus is characters appearing twice when typing, although the user has only hit the key once. [27]  Many reviews have noted the poor build quality of the phones, deeming the build quality "only so-so." [28]  In Engadget's second open letter to Palm, they stated, "Hardware issues which plagued the Pre, with no outward acknowledgment or rush to correct." [29]  They added, "We've seen countless reports, read too many blog posts to recall, and heard all sorts of horror stories about broken sliders, power buttons that stop functioning, the "Oreo cookie" effect, and more. Hell, even our first review unit broke!"

I use my phone as a phone and I wish for nothing more. If I could do other things on it, besides call people when I need to or set myself a reminder (because I'm an absent fuck), playing AGS games would be the #1 choice. That's what I thought; Until I got a phone that was capable of performing 70%+ of the things that I do on my computer just as well, if not better (I'm looking at you IM-ing.)  Why be tied to a laptop/desktop when you can have all you want in your hand, everywhere. It is the ultimate digital consolidation.

To be able stay productive and actually be connected to the outside world is priceless. All too often we are willing to sacrifice human interaction and genuinely living a physical life because we are tied up in our computers. Having a smartphone allows us to continue to do most of the things that you do on your PC, without having to be on your PC. It's freedom.

We're all salves to something. Some of us are slaves to food, some of us are slaves to sports, some of us are slaves to our jobs, our women, or our friends. You don't have to be a slave to your PC. Your PC is simply a conduit for your connectivity, productivity and entertainment. The things that fulfill these needs are typically software: NOT HARDWARE. More and more computers are moving into virtual software (Read: Web Apps) and the hardware will become quite irrelevant. However, many people fail to recognize that in our modern world the hardware IS ALREADY mostly irrelevant. Web Browsing, Communication (Email/IM/VOIP/Telecom/P2P-MSGing,) games, movies, music, cameras, productivity suites (MS Office/Google Docs/Outlook/Outlook/Calendars/To-Dos and Checklists) and more are all readily available on Smartphones! So rather than think: A smartphone is useless, I have a PC. Think: My PC is useless! It's an isolationist, distracting, slow-adapting, cumbersome piece of machinery.

Like it or not we're all slaves to something and the fact of the matter is that in the modern world we often rely on technology as the means to our ends; but we're not entirely without free will. WE CAN CHOOSE! You can choose the technology utilized to achieve your ends. You get to decide to the amount of freedom you have; you get to make the call: sedentary at a desk for hours on end, or Mobile?

So, our plans start at 39.99 for Unlimited Minutes and Nation wide coverage, Including Parts of Canada, and all U.S. Commonwealths (even the Virgin Islands!) There's no contract on this plan, however it does require approved credit. To fully utilize a smartphone I highly recommend a data connection, which is an additional $20, monthly. However, if you bundle Unlimited Minutes, Messaging and Data your monthly charges would be 59.99 plus taxes, which is really the best deal. All I'll need from you is a Photo-ID and and I can get this setup while you explore exactly which Smartphone is perfect for you. and if you have any questions about the handsets specifically do not hesitate to pull me away from the paper work.
