Title: Is Chrono Trigger the best RPG?
Post by: sum-41 on Fri 15/08/2003 15:48:07
Its not an adventure game, but this forum has everything so thought I would ask this. By far the best RPG experience I have had was Chrono Trigger. Post if you agree, and give me info on anything you think is better, as it must have some great gameplay. (Leave out MMORPGs, as there's a seperate thread for them.)

Chrono Trigger may be the best console RPG I've played.  I enjoyed Knights of the Old Republic more, but since I'm a Star Wars fan my opinion may have been biased.
But neither games can compare to what may be the greatest RPG I've ever played: Planescape Torment.

Two words.... Neverwinter Nights. It was rpg of the year. Its like a better version of Gauntlet and much more fun. If you have $30 bucks go out and buy it. Number one on my list of best Pc Game. :) Though it is Dungeons & Dragons it doesnt seem that way when you play though it is the same concept. NOW GO BUY IT!!!

Ps: My avaitor is one of the peoples... And she is really hot... :)

Chrono Trigger is my least favourite RPG game from Square... not to say that it isn't awesome, but I liked it less than say Secret Of Mana and it's sequal. The best RPG ever on a console I think is Final Fantasy 7. The depth and width of the entire game is insane, the music is ace, the plot is incredibly involving and has so many strands, elements and twists all the way up to the very end it's hard to keep up, and it's all excecuted perfectly. I love it to bits.
Repeat the last two sentances for Planescape: Torment too. That game is as brilliant, and slightly more adult.

I too am also in love with FF7. I think that it might very well be the best video game ever made...bar done. This game is simply huge, involving and dramtic. I actually cared about the chacacters, and what happened, something that is very rare in an RPG. Plus, it has huge replay value. My goal is to beat it before this year is over. Im almost done with the first disc, but the way Im playing, I doubt I'll get there.

/me gives FF7 4 1/2 thumbs up

oh, I also enjoyed chrono trigger and the secert of mana games, but that was a while ago, and Im too lazy to download roms to buy an snes

Evil, NWN is good, but nowhere near Black Isle's best. Planescape is by the same people, and much, much better. I'm a huge RPG fan and I've yet to play anything as good as Planescape.

Anyone got anything to say about goldensun? I could never complete it due to a faulty rom. Got caught in the mountain pass on the way to the flooded place.
The use of psynergy to solve puzzles and those little element animal combos made it amazinng. I was impressed- anyone else here?

Def is the guy to talk about Golden Sun with... I did play it for a while but stopped for some reason I can't remember. I never got into it's battle system that much, so that's probably why.

I'm an enormous Chrono Trigger fan.  I also thought Xenogears was incredible (except for when the pseudo-religious stuff got a bit too hokey), and Final Fantasy VI and VII were both awesome.

You're all wrong.

Nothing can compare to Dungeon Master. Nothing EVER.

Plus, the "Eye of the Beholder" games are worth a look (although number 3 is only for fans of the seriese, as it's a little on the ropy side)

Planescape is the best modern RPG by yards though.

If i could have but one RPG to take with me on a deserted island.  it would be chrono trigger.  music, backgrounds, characters, plot, battle system, everything is perfection.

chrono for life.

Until a few months ago, I would have surely said Baldur's Gate II: Shadown of Amn. And then I played Planescape: Torment.
I won't say the latter is better. They are quite seriously different. BGII is bigger and wide, with more possiblities and plain dungeons to explore, where P:T is more story based. If put together, they will complete each other. These two are 2 of my 3 favourite games, along with Grim Fandango and my favourite RPGs.

Is Chrono Trigger the best RPG?

No.

Is Chrono Trigger the best (Console) RPG?

Debatable...but it is a matter of opinion.

I love CT and FF7 but I fear they are getting over rated. They are great games but people seem to quick to label them MASTERPIECES OF THE GALACTICAL AMAZING ROCKINESS STUFF! When there are many Rpg's just as good or possibley better.

Like Terranigma, Placescape: Torment, Fallout 1/2, Illusion of Gaia, All the Dragon Quests and many others...

(All that has been said is opinion, mine acctually, take it as such..please!)

Chrono Trigger was great. I never finished it though. I loved the logic put into the translation as well "We have an enemy called a 'Debugger', so logically there could be one called a 'Bugger'"

Tales of Phantasia was awesome. Get yourself a translated ROM and check it out. Very cool real-time battle system, very cool game. Except that the encounter rate is huge. Two steps and you get attacked again.

The Gargoyle's Quest series (if you call them RPG's) was really good too. Pretty average stories, but a lot of fun. Demon's Crest on the SNES was the best of the series.

i really don't think fallout is better than chrono.  especially fallout 1.  as terranigma and tales of phantasia, they still don't reach the level of chrono perfection.  what faults did it have? if you said none you're right.  good for you.
Title: Re:Is Chrono Trigger the best RPG?
Post by: Sylpher on Sat 16/08/2003 07:10:24
Faults? This whole thread is strictly opinion based...their is no right answer.

If you like Chrono trigger more then any other Rpg then you probobly feel it is the best...but there is no scientific hardcore mathmatical proof it is the single best game over every other game...

anything is the best anything is a pointless debate...

Which I why I pointed out that my post was my opinion...cause In my opinion CT isn't the best RPG...

If you wanna know why I feel that way its not because there is anything wrong with CT...I just don't think the best of anything exists. it is all point of view and perspective.

Long story short...Chrono Trigger is great. Fallout is great. Terranigma is great...why debate which is the greatest great!

I disagree. When you consider the inverse tachonian ratios of the Patellian functions, a satisfactory and quantative value of quality can be achieved.

Lands of Lore was a bit of a let down for me. It was just too happy-clappy. Sure, it's worth playing, but Dungeon Master is just better in every area (except the graphics, which many people complain about. I have to say though, I never fell to drawing up maps of the identicle-looking dungeons, as I found I could remember my way around anyway! And I wasn't even in the scouts! I was so proud of myself. and I wupped that dragon's ass.)

:)Hey Punch, those sound really good. Would I need a SNES emulator or are they for a different console ??? I will allways love the snes graphic rpgs more than the 3D ones of today. Did anyone play Chrono Cross? Apparently, it's the sequel. Love to find out how good it is.

Keep posting, we're digging up some good games here.

True- there is no best. Just wanted to know how many people thought it was in their opinion, and if not, what they thought was. Thanx-keep 'em coming.

Downloaded a ROM of 7th saga today, and so far (5 mins) it is great, especially with enhanced graphic smoothening!(Is that a word :P).

Sorry hobbes, but what is BOCHS?

Cap'n Mostly- have downloaded DM2 for Mac and its great. Do you recommend that I get the first too?

Errr... try looking for Bochs somewhere on the internet. It's a x86 emulator. It allows you to run Windows or Ms-Dos.

Post by: Captain Mostly on Sat 16/08/2003 20:26:31
I'm bidding for a copy of DM2 on e-bay at the moment, as I've not played it yet (although I've craved it like m0ds craves the blood of virgins). But DM 1 is a masterclass in what made RPGs on computers WORK. The origional may not be as sophisticated as the sequil, so you might get pooped off at that, but it's a slice of history that still tastes as sweet as it ever did (eating the brains of man-eating screaming mushrooms? DM DID IT FIRST!!!)

EDIT:
It's also available as a tiny download on the underdogs (whatever their address is these days) along with a version of Chaos' Revenge (the origional, but not-at-all well known sequil, which is so hard I can't get out of the first room, although I'm willing to bet it's quite good...))

YAY! I'd forgotten about that site! It's too cool (although so many poilers!!!)

Mind you DM2 is the best case for the BADNESS of japanese-ification of games. See the contrast between the amega version and the PC j-friendly artwork, and chew your own teeth out at the ARRH! WHY SO STUPIDLY CUTE?!?!?! feature.
Title: Re:Is Chrono Trigger the best RPG?
Post by: Hobbes on Sat 16/08/2003 21:16:56
Why can't you set that up?

I've never used Bochs before, but it came with my BeOS installation... and having installed BeOS on a x86 machine, I could just boot back into Windows.

But, given, the program isn't very userfriendly.

Although Planescape: Torment sticks in my mind more because of it's brilliantly unique setting, I have to say Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is a better RPG in my opinion.

Aside from the hugeness and variety of the quests and locations, the brilliantly written story, and the clever 'stronghold' quests idea, the fantastic NPC system is what really struck me.  To be able to choose from such a variety of characters to accompany you, and then see them communicate with you, with each other, individually respond to important game events, and even follow through a love story, is simply brilliant.  It brought a whole new level of personalising your game experience to the genre.

P:T easily sticks in my memory more than BG2 due to its startlingly originality, but for me on every other level (plot, gameplay, personalisation, variety, replay value) BG2 is the better game.

CheapAlert: The first two were RPG, with the action scenes done platformery. The problem comes in where you draw the line. Is 'Zelda' an RPG or action-adventure? I'm willing to call it an 'action RPG' and stick GQ in there with it.

I almost got really into runescape, but I REALLY couldn't be bothered to build up my mining skills, let alone any of the armour-making stuff or baking. Or fishing. I mean, why bother when I could stand at a rock-face for hours and hours in real life!?!

It's certainly addictive for a while though, and if you've got patience I guess you'd find a reasonable amount of depth. But you could probably get a better MMORPG if you coughed up a little cash...

I think Ultima VII remains my favourite RPG, it's pretty much your straightforward 'Ye Olde England' fantasy world of knights, goblins, magic etc., but it's just done so well, and I like the level of freedom. It's about right, and it isn't too ambitious like, say 'Daggerfall', which is pretty huge but the same towns over and over again, with no individuality. Everywhere and everyone in Britannia has character in U7.

I am playing Chrono Trigger and loving it, though I haven't played it in a few months, as frustratingly I can't beat Magus in his castle, I'm thinking I need to level up everybody and learn some new tricks, which is always annoying.

I might try out the Baldur's Gate games but I'd probably need loads of spare time to get through them, they don't seem like instant gratification kinda games, which is what I always like.
Title: Re:Is Chrono Trigger the best RPG?
Post by: Captain Mostly on Sun 17/08/2003 12:56:58
Ultima VII is stunning, and the best free-roaming RPG alive (by free-roaming, I mean sort of "Explore our mysticle world" type of games... Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, etc)

Irritatingly though, I can't get it to run on my computer (stupid boot-disks, I've never got the hand of them) and even when I was able to play it, I got so stunningly caught up in exploring, I forgot immediatly what I was meant to be doing...

Also, I never figured out how to get the magic to work. This is something I find in a lot of RPG's, and one that Planescape and Baldur's gate (And eye of the beholder/Lands of lore) get very right with easy peasy to work out systems, but (Shocking though it is for me to be saying this) Dungeon master, Morrowind and ultima games get kind of wrong. Maybe I should make more effort to learn about the crazy rune systems before failing to bother to persue them...

Every now and then, people reference my letter in PCG, and pass comment on it.

I'm afraid to say, that I had a few printed, so I regularly have no idea which letter people are referencing, and as such I don't know if you're laughing at me, or with me. I suspect at me. But I guess I can cope with it.   :'(

EDIT: The exult thing looks cool! Maybe I'll be able to go back and wup those pirates in the face after all. That'll teach them to laugh at my glass sword (and the fact I could do diddly poop with the spell book I found on the castle roof...)

Did you ever find the magic carpet? That was the coolest bit in the game!

Chrono Trigger is definetly one of Square's best RPGS, but in my mind I still think the best RPG I've ever played is a game called "Xenogears", it has the most complex story I have ever seen in any video game full stop.  It also has an awesome battle system and graphics engine.  I highly recommend it to anyone with a PS1 / PS2 or a working PC emulator. :)

Ah, Chrono Trigger is surely one of Square's best games, but I wouldn't rate it the best RPG ever. Actually there are lots of wonderful RPGs which I've played (and probably lot more which I haven't played. ;) ).

Anyone remember EarthBound, Nintendo's and Hal's extraordinarily original creation? I've beaten it five times, before it became as popular as it's nowadays. I really should play it again someday.

As for Final Fantasies, I've only played FF4,5 and 6. Sixth one was excellent, but newer ones don't really interest me for some reason. (Probably because I'm so negative towards anything that masses like.) I'd still buy FF7 if I found it somewhere.

Ultimas are classics, nuff' said. :D Dungeon Master is another game which I haven't beaten yet, but I've liked it so far.

But of course, Nethack is my favorite RPG and I don't think anything will make that little fact change.

BTW, am I really the only person in the world, who thinks that Lavos's final form is nearly impossible to beat?  ::)

CT is the best traditional jRPG experience I had by far, but I still would have preferred not to have touched that reward-less time sink.

Planescape Torment, the first 2 Fallouts, Space Funeral and Spiderweb's Exile series (now remade into Avernum) are my favorite RPGs, and all made huge impressions on me.

Did I mention I tend to avoid RPGs altogether? At least nowadays.

I have very fond memories of playing Chrono Trigger on the SNES and later, on the PSP. It is one of my favourite RPGs of all time and ONE of the best RPGs of all time period.

However, I have to say that RPGs such as Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Dragon Quest III, Phantasy Star II and Suikoden all hold equal worth as Chrono Trigger and can be seen on many people's top 10 or top 20 lists.

Talking about a 17 year old RPG is also quite tempting, especially in such an ancient thread. Posting along with those elders.. *sigh*

Anyhow - I can never forgive myself for letting Marle get her legs crushed, because I played it on a Dreamcast and could get the machine code right with that dingy pad.
@Khris: what's your Chrono Tile Engine doing btw?
Title: Re: Is Chrono Trigger the best RPG?
Post by: Khris on Wed 15/08/2012 08:24:13
It's on hold :)
I still have to code the splicing of the sprites along tile borders and at this point I'm not sure if it's worth it. Recreating the tile engine only makes sense from a nostalgic point of view, and there's also Golden Sun now with it's really cool 2.5D tile engine.

Isn't almost everything here about nostalgia, that's no reason for putting it on hold :P But of course creating an engine inside an engine without an active project around might be an awkward task.
But anyhow, it was really impressive and parts of it also made it into my engine (Promotion tile-code parsing).

RPG wise I believe that FF 7,9+10 are awesome ( Plot lines that really involve your emotions an make you want to play them again and again. Lands of Lore with mr Stewart was also awesome.
Did anyone ever play NOX ?
I haven't played Chrono Trigger but I hear its good..

About damn time someone does something like this.

Also Mother 3> Earthbound> Chrono Trigger

Planescape Torment is a game I'm in the process of, and then I'll probably move on to Secret of Evermore, Terranigma, and FF6.

I never thought that Chrono trigger was anything special..I think it's quite overrated. I love RPG's but IMO there are better games...like Dragon quest 8 - Journey of the cursed king (Had lots of fun with that) Final fantasy VII (How original of me hehe) and FF XII. But my best RPG experience so far is without doubt The Elder Scrolls IV
