Title: Gabriel Knight Games
Post by: Ariadne on Mon 16/04/2007 15:51:39
Hi, everyone!
I read an old comment posted for the game "Bestowers of Eternity". The player stated that it was the best game he/she played since Gabriel Knight games. And since -in my humble opinion- Bestowers of Eternity was a great game, I was wondering if there are any websites where I can find Gabriel Knight series. Sorry if this post is stupid, but I only recently discovered the euphoria of adventure point and click games and I just can't get enough!
Thank you!  :D

Well it's not stupid, but some might say wiki would help a lot :) anyway, as far as I know, Sierra hasn't made it an abandonware, so, you might want to try online shops or the local gamestore. I bet no-one will direct you to an illagel torrent or anything.

The GK games are some of the best I ever played.  (Actually, I haven't played the 3rd one yet, but I'm gonna try and get my hands on it.)

I know of places you can download these games, but I just couldn't say...

@Tuomas
@Raggit

Thank you for replying so fast!
To be honest (and I am sooooo ashamed to admit it, but I will open my heart to the forum), I am so ignorant that I never ever played Sierra Lucas games and I don't even know what they look like! I know, I am a blot on the AGS community, but I am trying so hard to keep up with the rest of you guys!). I got truly obsessed with AGS and adventure pnc games in general!
;D
Off to follow your advice now!

Really? I couldn't tell  ;) hehe, as long as you make awesome games, it doesn't matter what you play :D

None of the three GK games has been made abandoneware so far, at least not "official abandonware". Blood of the Sacred, blood of the Damned, the last installment of the series, is still in store, and low budget too, and you may be lucky enough to find it somewhere. It is very well worth your time. The first GK is no longer sold but still frequently pops up on eBay, that's where I got mine (I had the original but sold it to my cousin- foolish!).
Part 2 I never played, though I was told it wasn't that good.

Yes, these forums aren't the place for illegal torrents or other such shenanigans. And rightly so. :)

But the following links are generally perceived to be okay:

Abandonia (http://www.abandonia.com/genre.php?genre=adventure&page=0), which is, as I have stated in the past, the closest thing to a "legal" source of abandonware.

And The Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.info/genre.php?id=3), which is also fairly kosher.

Getting old adventure games to run is a bit of an adventure in itself, so you might want to have a look at:

ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/) for running old LucasArts titles (it will also run a number of independent games such as Simon the Sorceror or Beneath a Steel Sky).

DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1) for running everthing else.

The ScummVM site also has a number of ex-commercial adventures for download.

These links should provide you with enough adventuring to last you into the next millenia. :)

If and when you get the first two GK games, you might find this link helpful:

Glad to see my comment had such an effect. :)

Just off topic slightly,

I bought all 3 GK games on ebay a couple of years ago, I never got to finish GK2, It's on 6 cd's and the only cd that is screwed is disc 6, and even some of disc 6 works, so I've still never finished it. and I guess I wasn't too far from the end.

very frustrating at the time, is there any way to repair a totally scratched cd, I'm guessing data cd's that have lost vital info are impossible to repair, I've tried to copy the disc before, but it eventually gets to a point where it cant read anything and the disc just keeps spinning.

Timosity - if you bought it and it was screwed, then have no qualms about getting it from P2P.

As long as the scratches are only in the plastic and the metal foil layer isn't damaged, you could try getting one of those scratch repair kits that work by grinding down the damaged part of the plastic. You can see a number of different products at: http://www.computercleanusa.com/products/getprod.asp?product_id=cd-335
Try asking around if any of your friends have a device similar to the Gamedoctor/Skipdoctor product on that page, that's the kind of device that dvd rental shops use to repair their discs, and it's probably the safest way to do it as they always peel off an even layer.

@Ghost
@LimpingFish
@Rui "Trovatore" Pires

Thanks for all your help!
I thought that the Gabriel Knight Games are old games created by AGS or by a similar engine.
Now, I am going to find the word "abandonware"*** in Wiki, because - God forbid - I don't want to do anything illegal!
;D

***Please, don't hit your heads on the wall ..... I told you, I am ignorant!

The only problem with that is I'm pretty sure you need the exact same version of the game for it to work, and I'm not going to bother downloading all discs. eg. in a lot of games if you've got saved games, and you try to open them in a different version, they don't open and give an error message. but it may be worth a try if I can't fix it

I'd never heard of that, thanks for the info, cause I think it is just surface scratching

There aren't really all that many versions of Gabe 2, Tim.

Well, don't always believe what you're told  ;D - I found GK2 to be a very enjoyable game. And definitely the best "live action" game I've played. Still have to finish GK3 though...

Still have to finish GK3 though...

1. Install Gabriel Knight 3.
2. Play it for 5 minutes.
3. Uninstall Gabriel Knight 3.
4. Optional but recommended: Burn game.

Finished.

It had to be known at this point that LFish hates GK3 and is in no way inclined even to agree to disagree on anything about GK3. And do be warned that GK3 does have a few shortcomings [cue LF's reply quoting thing and all the numerous things he considers shortcomings]. But I have faith that it won't hinder your enjoyment, I sure loved it.

Anyway, you've got two wholes games before you get to GK3, namely GK1 and GK2. :D

I do indeed despise it. :)

And I will never, ever, pass up the opportunity to say so.

But, by all means, take the time to play it and form your own opinion.

You never know...

I tend to agree with Fish on GK3, though despite everything horrible about it (and there was quite a bit) I still somehow I played through it and enjoyed a few things about it.  GK 3 is like a discarded wad of gum on a drinking fountain: it looks disgusting and is full of germs, but if you chew on it you'll discover it still has a little flavor.

As far as GK 2, though...the only redeeming quality of that game was the money I got back for returning it!

You definitely should check out GK 1, though.  It's pretty much the best standard adventure game Sierra made.  Quest For Glory 1-4 are also great, but aside from that I'd skip Sierra and play lucasarts games instead.

Most early Sierra games were made by sadists, really.

Can a game possibly be devoid of any redeeming features?

Honestly? Imho, yes. Although...

As has been proven, some people enjoyed GK3; so somewhere among it's bloated, stinking husk there logically lies some elements that don't totally offend. I couldn't find them, but others obviously have.

The original GK was a good, solid game.

Next to GK3, GK1 is the equivalent of finding a hot, naked girl in your bed.
With huge knockers.
That taste like Oreos.
And dispense hunded dollar bills when the nipples are tweaked.

Make of that what you will.

You need to change your dosage again.
