Title: some recent art
Post by: Ophidic on Mon 13/03/2023 05:52:49
I've been converting paintings and things into 16 color EGA, and these are a few of 'em with the originals for comparison. I've omitted/changed some details to make them more room-like or whatever or just cuz I got lazy. I assume this is the right place to just show stuff you did.

I'm not great at animation, but I started doing a sprite for Son of Man.

I'm realizing now that I made the coat longer as it is in the painting, I have to make that change on the front view sprite as well.

Oh and here's a couple I did while taking a look at Tom and Jerry background cels. They're really weird without characters in them.

Very nice.  :-D
Did you trace over the images or did you eyeball it?
To me, it looks like a little bit of both.

Whatever the case, it looks very nice. I especially like your use of differing.
I'm not sure about the use of magenta for the skin colour for The Son of Man. You can usually get a pretty decent colour if you use orange and yellow. But that's just my opinion.

Speaking of The Son of Man. I know it's a famous painting, but every time I see it, I can't help but think that the artist couldn't be bothered to draw a face, so he just drew an apple over it and called it art.  (laugh)

You may wish to get rid of the double pixels that ended up with some of your diagonal lines, they sort of mess up the look.

As another EGA guy I would say don't be afraid to dither dither dither.  Of course, that's partially a stylistic choice.  The solid colors may look better to you but as a big Colonel's Bequest guy I will always want to dither.  Check out The Telwynium (https://powerhoof.itch.io/the-telwynium) for more dithered EGA greatness.  Those games look amazing.

Yeah it was a bit of both. :D

I did start using the orange for skin tone a while after this, I just made a new thread where i made a maniac mansion style sprite of myself and drew a room and a few assets to go in it. It looks much better :)

I do dither sometimes but i don't wanna overuse it and then be bound to dithers all over just yet haha.

I actually have a video of me tracing over a screenshot of the old back to the future 80s cartoon.

Really like how some of the backgrounds look in the older cartoons so i thought id give it a go and record it while i did so.
