Title: Manga-styled picture
Post by: Rincewind on Sun 06/07/2003 19:28:56
Ok, right now I'm a real Manga/Anime-period, with the Neon Genesis Evangelion Theme running constantly in Winamp, and a raging Rouroni Kenshin-fever, so I've finally taken up drawing manga again. Thing is, my scanner is busted for the moment, which means I can't scan my drawings, so therefore I got the idea of doing some purely computer-made manga-pictures instead... And to be honest, the first couple of attempts looked like crap, but now I'm finally getting the hang of it:

I may even make a game in this style if I can succeed in doing the bodies as well... ;D
What do you think?

Well,
The eyes are a little bit too high up, they should be in about the middle of the head. Same goes for the nose, it should be at about one quater mark. Mouths of females in manga tend to be smaller and representd by a line instead of drawn out lips. Her hair starts way too high making her llok like she has a receeding hairline and her neck is a bit too long. Also, some shading for a sence of dimension would be nice. Sorry if I sounded nasty please don't commit suicide  :'(

If it were manga, her hair should be way more colourful. And messed up, too. And longer! There's something wrong with the shape of the head, too. It's... too oval. Try to make it rounder. And she's almost bald with the forehead having no hair.

It looks good - just not mangaish enough.  ;)

it's a very good pic, although I agree with fatal woman,

And, it doesn't really look like manga,
but great though

It is mangaish, just because her eyes are round doesn't mean she is not manga, the eye in my avatar is used in girls and young women and older women have narower eyes. Her hair is alright though red is only used in the evil evil EVIL characters because it's a sign of a dangerous person. And.. her nose is a bot too big and her eyebrows are at a very steep angle for that sort of character.

You need to darken the shadows a bit. Right now there's not enough contrast. Also, I don't really know much about manga style, but shouldn't the nost be smaller?

I think the hair could use an extra highlight color to make it look more shiny.

Looks good so far. I'd like to see a game in this style. Good to see people actually putting effort into their graphics.

EDIT: By the way, don't worry if it's not perfect manga. I'd rather see you using a somewhat unique style. I think manga is a bit overused these days..

EDIT:

Here's an example to show what I mean:

I darkened the shadows to give more contrast, and added another highlight to the hair. Could be better, but it does the job  :P.

Hey, thanks everyone for the helpful critisism!

Sasha:
I always get the placement of eyes/nose/ears wrong somehow... Bah... But I will try to fix it, though. I fixed the hairline already, so that's one problem out of the world... ;D
And if red is the colour of evil women, then be it! We have a very evil woman among our midst... (Quake in terror, everybody!)

Stickieee:
More colourful? Well, isn't red colourful enough? No, I think I'll keep it the same coulour, but maybe brighten it a bit.
Yikes, don't know if I'm capable of changing the shape of her head now without screwing everything up... Hehe... We'll have to see...

Ben:
Wow! That's great! I have already changed her a bit, but now I got some new ideas... Thanks! I'll add another highlight for sure.
I redid the nose as well, but it's not exactly smaller... I'll keep on trying, and I'll post when I feel satisfied... ;D
And I might use this style - Not sure. I have some other ideas as well.

Changed a lot - Her hair, her nose, her eyes, her lips, her eyebrows, the shading, and of course, an sign of "Evil" was nessecary. ;D
This one looks slightly more Manga, no?

Nice.

I think the shadow on the face is too light though. You should edit the palette and make the shadows for the face, hair, and shirt the same colors as the outlines.. And then maybe darken them some more. Right now the shades are too close together in brightness, which makes the image look flat.

That's very very good but her neck still seems odd somehow..

if you really want it more manga-styled, the outlines have to be black :P

Not really, if the picture is defined by shadows it's okay to have body coloured lines...
BTW, that girls hair reminds me of my own... Same style, similar colour  :o

Ben:
I just made the shading a tiny bit darker, so you might be right.

Sasha:
I think that's because the neck is tilted in one angle, while her head is completely straight up. I might be able to change it without making it worse... ;D

And I know that manga/anime usually have black outlines, but I tried doing that in MS-paint, and the result was... Well... It looked shit, to be quite honest.
On paper it looks good, but not here... Hehe...

wow! the new one looks just wonderfull! dont lsten to anyone who tells you to change it, unless they say it looks a bit like she has bags under her eyes, as that is true.

i agree with everyone the newone is better, the smaller shape of the nose in comparison to large eyes is definately manga styled.
