Title: Jazz experiment
Post by: Ghormak on Fri 26/03/2004 14:44:22
I've been playing a bit with jazz-ish sounds and stuff, but I'm definitely no expert in the genre so I'd appreciate some comments on what I need to improve on.

This is a little improvisation thing I made for no specific purpose really (mainly just tried to get the sound somewhat decent). It is based on the opening guitar riff in the credit tune from Sam & Max (Pleasantly Understated Credit Sequence).

Some comments and hints on hove to improve would be much appreciated!

Nice ending there. I recognize that roland brush drumkit. :)

I suggest:

1. Slow it down a bit. It sounds a bit mechanically fast, and not at a 'natural' tempo.

2. Add snare 'ghost notes'. They're quieter to freshen up the beat. Place them randomly on the upbeat. (the "ands") In some sections, put a slap snare sound on the 2nd beat or both 2nd and 4th beats.

3. Add just a bit more overall swing. Make it sassier. :)

4. Sparsen stuff during the brass hits and melody. For example, drums and guitar quieter to provide good contrast in the A section.

5. Add more velocity change in the the sax solo. Make the less important notes quieter. Make it dynamic.

Hope that helps a bit!

I agree with Geoff on the velocity changes. Also, a few subtle pitch-shifts on the sax would make it sound more lifelike. Also, I'd add a little more to the part after the sax solo. It sounds a little bare between that point and the ending..

I like the rythm guitar in this. Has a nice tone, and you did a good job of making it sound realistic, which isn't easy in a tracker..

In my opinion, you should crank that bass up!
