I just downloaded the 30 day trial version of Flash MX. Wow! What a program. Perfect for cartoon style artwork.  I may consider an entire game in this style. This screenshot isn't for a game. It's more of just a style test. Tell me what you think.  It comes in two flavors ...

Doh! Ok, I fixed the link ... it now links to the full sized file. :)

Nice style!

Reminds me of Tim Furnish's game, Out of Order.

Wow, that's just great!
I would love to acheive such cartoony results in Flash.
You know I think you just inspired me to try and do something in Flash! :)

I love all the details in the image, it makes it feel complete with all the little additions! :)

Thats really cool flash art!
I can't see anything really wrong with it except the bed looks kind of odd to me.
Good work! Got any more to show us?

Necro

My game isnt all in flash cartoony style even though it is cartoony, but I have used this approach for the intro and fullscreen charcters..

normal screenie in game...

I recently discovered how cool flash could make things look, and for full screen character views it is simply perfect!

Ionias

The bed might look kind of odd because it retracts into the wall. This is the only artwork I've made in Flash so far. I want to test some characters next.

Does anyone know how to best EXPORT a flash character for AGS?

magintz

umm... the way I did it was to copy the thing into paint shop pro or photoshop and go from there

Thats my question excactly, I was planning on using flash for a game, but when you export the characters image, it gets all foogly and pixelated, losing a lot of that flash charm....

If you get some sort of method down, or if somebody else does, please let me know...

Ionias

I've seen your Flash artwork Squinky, great stuff. Do you do your drawing inside flash or scan pencil artwork?

Say, I've been thinking of making flash cutscenes, which will probably be one of the hardest things to do for my game (top secret, shh ;)), but I really love cutscenes so...
Can Flash export as avi or mpg formats? :)

And also, does anyone know how cut scenes like the ones in Grim Fandango were made? With what program? Of course I'll never reach that level of art, but the program itself interests me. Or do they use an engine they programmed?

(I believe the cut scenes in MI4 were also in the same style/way, though not sure..)

Ginny, as far as I can remember flash can export to avi and/or to Apple Quicktime (.mov). And if you've got the RAD video tools, you can convert a mov to an avi.

I think the cutscenes in MI4/Grim Fandango were created using the games engine (is it SCUMM-Time again?) and that scripting language LUA but it's a long time since I've played G.F. (although I'm more a fan of MI1&2 and other 2D adventure games)

I think the cutscenes in Grim Fandango were pre-rendered by whatever 3d graphic program the makers used. They weren't done by the in-game realtime 3d engine as far as I understand it.

Nevertheless, as The Kork says, RAD video tools are really useful, for compiling, compressing, scaling and adding sounds to video sequences. Their technology was used in both Toonstruck and Broken Sword.

Here's the link to some of their free software:

Yep, I just use the mouse....Never have figured out how to scan in a picture and do anything useful with it....

Cute. Flash is great for this kinda thing.

All the backgrounds for my current game were done in flash. :)

Looks nice Ionias! Remember though, 800x600 game will be very slow on my computer :P

One thing, maybe you could use thinner outlines? I like them black, but they are too thick.

I dunno- I like the chunky effect achieved. Love all those curves! :) ie: rectangle sides bent out slightly etc...
