hello everybody,

i was just wondering how many games have used full hand drawn backgrounds, coloured and drawn on paper and then scanned into a computer?

is it worth doing for a 320 resoloution game, as it would save me a lot of time drawing on computer.

thanx,

Low res art is usually pixelled, but in FoY's backgrounds Miez draws in pencil first and uses that as the skeleton for the pixelled artwork.  Monkey Island 2's backgrounds were oil painted then scanned and they worked well.  So if you find it easier to do hand drawing you can certainly do it that way.  You may want to do some pixel work afterwards you, just so thinks don't look too blurry.

Actually, the backgrounds in MI2 were painted using Acrylics, I am nearly certain, which is good because they are a lot nicer to use than Oils.

Also, if you are going to hand paint backgrounds I would try using Guashe, if you don't like acrylics. They're also quite nice to use.

There are pictures of some MI2 backgrounds here.

Okay, one thing I would say, looking at these pictures, is that you'll notice that the colour and lighting is simply defined. Ack, wait, I know I can word this better. That the colour and light between objects... contrast... uh... so it scans in better. Huh. Wait. Hm.

It is funny you should mention this anyway, because I was considering hand painted backgrounds for my next game.
