The AGS Panel is a team of AGS forum veterans who play all of the games here, and give them ratings from one to five cups. The rating system is as follows:
1 Cup Not serious entertainment
2 Cups A reasonable game, worth a try
3 Cups A good game, worth playing
4 Cups A great game, well worth your time
5 Cups An outstanding, must-play game!
Feel free to disagree with the panel's rating, and please don't be offended if you think your game has been underrated!

(Why has my game been rated 1 cup?)

If your game has been rated 1 cup, please don't be offended! It's common for your first game release to get a 1-cup rating, due to the game having a lack of polish and flair -- which is understandable, because you're just getting started!

Please understand that the main purpose of the ratings is to help potential game players find high quality, bug-free games to play. You've probably learnt a lot about AGS as a result of making your first game -- so why not use that knowledge to start afresh, and do even better with your next game!

About this game

The game tells a story of a homeless man who communicates with the world using an old sock on his right hand. He's a huge football fan and plays it a lot near his backalley. One day he gets mugged by a wandering bully and looses his precious ball in the process. Now he must pull himself together, team up with a local superhero, find a new ball and confront his oppressor again.

A very entertaining p&c adventure with lots of retro-feeling, humor, interesting characters and nice puzzles.
I just would like the dialogs to be skippable (when realizing that there is the same long dialog again) like mentioned before.
Overall it is to be seen that a lot of effort has been put into this very nice game successfully and I really can recommend you to play it. I had a lot of fun doing so - let's talk to the sock! ^-^

I enjoyed this one very much. As everyone else already wrote - it's full of Sierra and Lucas Arts nostalgia. The graphics fit the setting perfectly and there's quite a lot of animation going on here.
But it's not only the presentation - it also fun as hell.

Try it, even if you're not a soccer fan.

This is a neat game with excellent graphical retro fidelity, the animations being the weakest part but still very nice. I also liked the overall idea and characters in the game.

I did not like the pacing (as people have said, the dialogs drag on and on and on, too much text and way too many character.Say(...) pauses as well, almost between every line of dialog). This makes the game take much longer to play than it should and can be really frustrating. I wasn't very keen on a lot of the puzzles either, as they seemed fairly far-fetched and absurd. There's a couple more no-nos: one or two pixel hunts, some unclear exits (some you have to use, others you can just walk near to), interactions being locked off until you do a specific thing and, probably the most important, a lot of repeatedly inspecting objects to trigger actions.

It's still a decent game, as I said, I'm just trying to point out the things that stood out to me in a negative way so you can try and work on these aspects for the next installment

A fantastic game that channels the spirit of the early 90's adventure gaming. References and cameos all over the place to classic games, movies and tv shows. Great story and locations, perfect pacing and game length, I can only highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this game. The whole game shows a lot of effort, in puzzle diversity, in pacing, in animations, in music, in characters, and especially in humour. I laughed out loud quite some times, and chuckled even more often. Looking forward to the sequel!

One minor thing: While funny, the dialogues were often pretty long, with many pauses, especially when you look a second time at an object, it is a bit annoying when you have to click the text away and have to wait through all the small pauses. Still, this doesn't take much from the overall enjoyment. Well done, a well-chosen Pick of the Month, and all hopefully upcoming AGS Awards will be well-deserved!

Great game! I really liked the animations and dialog. A fun game to play. The puzzles left me a little lost at times... as far as what I was supposed to do next, but I was able to move along okay.

Everything has been said in previous comments. The game is amazing, shows tons of effort, is written nicely and *you* must play it now!

Great game, can't wait for the sequel!

Really nice game. You should absolutely check it out. Lovely graphics, well crafted puzzles, good amount of variation, great football references (especially final cutscene).

To point out things that I didn't like so much (note that they really didn't stop me from enjoying the game).
Several times I had problems to find hotspots (v1.02). Some puzzles require you to do the same thing more than once (like looking at something 3 times in a row).
… the ending was a little anti-climactic. … yet the "cogito ergo sum" made up for it :)

An excellent choice for Pick of the Month!

Seriously, if you have fond memories of the Golden Age of adventure gaming... you'll love this, do yourself a favour and play it.

This is an amazing game that captures the feeling of lucas arts adventures in the early 90s.All is there wacky brilliant humor, clever open puzzles and relaxed gameplay so you dont have to worry about dying or meticulous time based puzzles.Do a favor to yourself and be sure to play this little gem!

In my opinion the creators managed to create something that - while being completely different and original - very much captures the humorous and deep feel of the Monkey Island universe. Especially with that ending I very much hope to see a follow-up episode of the BUM.

Hi Gribbler. Finished The Bum. Thanks again for your help. Lovely game which I thoroughly enjoyed. Nice graphics, nice "plot", and excellent fun. Lovely attention to "supporting" detail / atmosphere, e.g. the girl skipping in the park. Well done indeed. Highly recommended. Regards, Wendy

Really fun game, and just the right level of difficulty. Well-polished graphics, lots of fun little animations and touches, and very witty dialogue. Well done guys.

An absolutely hilarious game! The main protagonist -- a guy with a sock (or should I say a sock with a guy) -- is a good indication of what we can expect: non-stop absurd humor. Actually, he may not be the craziest of the bunch. You'll meet a few loonies on your quest. Great fun all around -- with just a bit too much pixel hunting here and there (but I was playing one of the first versions, and I suppose that got fixed).

Apparently the profanity and pixel hunts are being taken out of the game, so I can't find anything left not to like about it! :-D Adventure games, football, talking socks... a match made in heaven.

A true love letter to Adventure gamers and football fans! Can't wait for the sequel.

Stop reading this and download it, now. A well made and fun game with interesting characters and beautiful animations. The puzzles were fun to figure out and the game world is filled with color and a pleasure to look at. Two thumbs up!

If you like your adventure games classic and retro, look no further. The Bum is a lovesong to "old-school" point and click adventures, offering charming graphics and often witty writing. This is a "first game" done really well.

There are some unnecessary pixel hunts and situations where a puzzle can be solved before it's stated to be a puzzle. Don't let that stop you to help a man and his sock (or is that a sock and its man?)!

Really enjoyed this game and a great homage to the classic LucasArts games in particular. The only negatives for me were the occasional profanities and pixel hunts. I liked the unusual main character and plot.

I think this was a really good game and I look forward to the sequel.
